Bubba at it again...
Well Bubba struck again. This time on my '89 350 Sub. The very first exhaust manifold to head bolt is striped!  He tried to fix the problem by inserting a larger bolt and then tightening.  Now it's leaking with the give-away tick-tick sound.
My question---How should I fix the bolt hole which is in the head?? Remove the head first. Try to drill a larger hole thru the existing exhaust manifold bolt hole and the the head and then re-tap the hole? Remove the exhaust manifold first? I might have enough room to access the bolt hole without removing the head....
Anyone use those insert kits. Will one work in this situation?
Is there a rapid temporty fix until the weather warms?
Easy fix with a Helicoil kit and a 25/64" drill. The 3/8"-16 Helicoil kit (12 inserts, Helicoil tap, and insertion tool) you need is #5521-6, plus a 25/64" drill bit. Pull the manifold, drill out the hole, tap it, insert the Helicoil, and you're good to go.
