Re: '67 Radiator Support Shims..... (Patrick Tighe)
Patrick, I believe you said the front end had been repaired poorly, and you planned to replace the front end. I expect the shims were tack welded in place when the front end was repaired.
I can see it now...Mr. Bodyman would start in with the radiator support, and a shim or two would fall out...He would replace the shims and start in with the support and the shims would fall out again. Finally, he says, "Alright...If that's the way you shims want it, I will WELD you sonsabeaches in place!"

Patrick
I recently finished rebuilding the front end of my 67 convert. and found the radiator support shims tack welded in place. Don't know why. I busted them out and and ground off the weld. Since I replaced the radiator support with a repro, the number of shims required was different than what was installed originally. Didn't have any problem with them falling out.
BTW, I enjoyed your comments about removing the wiper motor. I had the same problem, too little space, too big hands. What a PITA.

This information comes from the April, 2000 issue of Corvette Fever in the Resto Clinic section authored by Noland Adams.
There is lots more, as you can imagine, but here's the relevant portion:
"The front body mount (#1) is between the radiator support and the frame. The shims are welded in place at the factory and rarely need to be modified."
Hi Patrick. They're supposed to be welded. Every car I've ever seen has had shims welded, just like your pic, on one or both sides. My 63 is that way, and it's never been hit. I'm helping a friend this winter with his 67 roadster. He has everything out...including the radiator. His shims are welded just like yours. Hope this helps. Chuck

Yep, I was thinking the same thing you were, but I knew you were too smart to listen to me about midjeers. Who'da thunk it! Bubba on the line burnin' shims with an electric welder. :D :D
Re: '67 Radiator Support Shims..... (Chuck Gongloff)
Chuck - My mid-March SWC (10943) doesn't NOT have tack welded shims under the radiator support, but it looks like this must have been a change later on in production. I suspect they were having problems keeping them in place before the body came down, and I'm assuming that the radiator support was already bolted onto the fenders before the body drop.
Re: '67 Radiator Support Shims..... (Chuck Sangerhausen)
For them that have REAL Corvettes, the later Shark cars use masking tape on the radiator support shims just like the body mount shims.
Due to the superior accuracy of the mid-year craftsmanship, the boys in the factory could go ahead and weld in the front mounts, knowing there wouldn't be a problem. :D
