You can't re-stamp a pad without it being detected by a knowledgeable inspector. Can't be done. Go to the Al Grenning seminar, and you'll find out why. All the broach marks makers and correct stamps and gang holders make no difference.
I agree that you should restore and make your car anyway you want. But no one spends $2000 to re-stamp a pad for their own personal benefit. That's done for NCRS points and/or resale value.
According to the add you can get a rebuilt numbers matching short block for ~$2000.

No difference. Numbers matching doesn't mean original. Numbers matching means the numbers on the block match the VIN on the body. Period. Restamped or not.
This type debate has always fascinated me. Why would it be considered ok for the OP to re-cover seats that are missing their original vinyl, let's say, with accurately reproduced vinyl covers, and no one raises an eyebrow. Yet a560156 and I think Easymike as well as many others are disturbed when the OP or anyone else wants to replace the missing block with the correct part number block, with a good date code and pay good money to have it broached and VIN stamped to agree with a tank sticker and other documentation that supports that type of engine shown on the documentation. I really don't see any difference in the two scenarios. Yes it's OK to restore missing seats, distributors, heads, body panels, hoods, top frames, radios, tachometers, wheels etc. No, you cant restore missing blocks, if you do the boogie man is gonna get you. It really sounds childish to me. Am I missing something?

I really don't think anyone has a problem with restoring a missing block that matches factory paperwork. Things however start to get clouded up when a block gets restored then the car gets sold a few times and all of a sudden it's an original motored car. I think that is where people start to get upset by restamping blocks. Bottom line is if you want the real deal do your homework and only buy cars with full traceable ownership history, this way you know what you are getting.
I can't speak for him but my interpretation of his posts is that he has no problem with restamping a motor for the sake of restoration but to restamp to make it something that its not ie. a small block into a big block, or an NOM car into an original motored car, thats where he and most of us have a huge problem with.

Sorry, but I'll have to disagree. The OP never mentioned anything about making the car something it isn't. Some of the postings following the original question (a560156 specifically) take a position that, for some reason I have yet to understand, the OP trying to re-construct a part of a legitimately (i am trusting the OP here) documented car is wrong and must be discouraged. Disouraged to the point of threats, "We will find and expose you!!"
(my quotes added for literary emphasis)
I really would like to hear a defense of this position.
