That looks very nice, Patrick. Er, uh...four coats??!!! Can you still see the sand cast grain in the iron? :D

So, are those new valve covers, or did you get your old ones "re-skinned"? They look pretty sharp.

Lookin good PT, lookin good.

Observation: unless you have lift attachments bolted to the back of the intake, of which I've only seen cast iron ones have 'em, you might want to wait and bolt intake, carb after engine is in chasis. I've seen hoist chains and anchors do pretty nasty things to aluminum intakes. Even torqued down, if the anchor is on top of the intake I've seen 'em crack. :nonod:

One more thing...pls take your plugs out before install...Murphy's Law. Plug sticks out, accidentally hits A-arm, PT spends the weekend removing plug. :troll: Disregard if they are in there for painting purposes. :jester

Looking good. and I msut admit that I did the same thing a year ago today.

Heck I left the paint on the exhaust mating surfaces to help seal gaps.

Patrick,
The engine has been in for a year and has held up great.. Nothing like painting them out of a can. and even with the oild pressure adapter springing a leak the paint and all looks great. Good luck and keep up with the photos.

Let me throw in some "controversy" :) AND.....I'm not sure of the answer. The area of the head where the intake manifold mounts.....is it supposed to be orange, OR, because you have an aluminum intake, should it be silver. I thought aluminum manifolds were "sprayed" silver, and that the silver covered the gasket, and the area of the head where the manifold mounts. With a cast iron manifold, I don't know if it should be natural steel, or painted orange. Let's see what the "guru's" say. :) Chuck

I can't speak for all years or even for small blocks, but big blocks with aluminum intakes like mine were painted with exhaust manifolds, intake and valvecovers all installed during painting. Overspray is found on the exhaust manifolds where they mate to the head, the intake where it mates to the block and heads and valvecovers and gaskets got soaked as well. The intakes did not receive a coat of silver paint in an attempt to cover up the overspray - they just left it. Because small blocks came with finned aluminum covers I don't know how those were done for sure - I do think they were not installed during engine paint.

Hello Lance. I believe you're 100% correct about big blocks. I should have specified small block. Chuck

Looks great Patrick. I played fake assembly with mine too. I also went with Plastikote on the advice of this board and am very pleased.

I think it is photos 81-88

I thought I read that the aluminum head cars did NOT have overspray on the heads and manifolds.

Shame to have to put gas and oil in it and actually fire it. Why don't you get a crate engine to put in the car and just leave that one on display? Too pretty to put in the car. :D
