Installing sidepipe front bracket rivets on a C2
I definitely know where Fox Run is at!! It's about 20 minutes from my place!! Such a small world!! I already registered for the Echelon mall show so maybe I will meet you there. It's nice to know who you are talking to and I'd love to have a better look at that 66. I have a Red 1993 SLP Firehawk with Polished Torque Thrust II's on it. Most likely I'll be cleaning it so I hope to see you there!!
p.s. If I can be of any help for anything, please feel free to ask!!
"Is there any certain size tools you recommend for these rivets?? I know John had said he ordered a 3/16 tool that is 5.5" long..........."
I purchased the assortment for about $25 but the 3/16 should work fine
You might try resetting rivets that you have already hand peened if you are unhappy with the way they look
Buck the finished side and impact the hand rolled end LIGHTLY, if there is enough rivet material deformed by hand peening you will be pleasantly surprised how micely they can be made to look, if there is not enough rivet to effectively polish what is remaining you will do no harm if you approach it carefully

"Normal" aircraft practice is to put the bucking bar on the "raw" end and the impact hammer on the finished head (at least that's the way I was taught by our local A&P guys). That's why you can get the impact gun inserts with the concave in the end, to match the round head on some rivets, not to shape the deformed end. The bucking bar actually does the "peening" on the rebound stroke after being bounced away by the impact gun hit, which is why you want as heavy a bucking bar as you can get access with. Give it a try sometime.
I hand set the rivets on my headlight bracket bonding strips the same way, hammer on the finished head with a flat face body hammer and buck the "raw" end. Worked just dandy.

Understand that, most industrial applications are performed in the identical manner where hand peening is specified however I have tried both methods and like the appearance of the results produced by doing it in the reverse. Either method is far superior to hand hammer peening.
Hi to all at home and hope you are well

I think I am going to do what you did and order the straight assortment. For $25.00, that seems like a deal. As for the rivets I installed, I took most of them out. I was trying to do them myself and they weren't even close to right. I'll enlist the help of my dad this time once I get the new tools. Thanks again for all your help, I really do appreciate it!! It's nice to know someone as knowledgeable as yourself will take the time to help the beginners out there.

The rivet tool worked great !!! 40 lbs seemed to be the correct air pressure for these aluminum rivets. I bucked the finished side using a piece of cast iron on the floor. Nicely peened and rounded the rivets on the back side. I got Mrs JL66REDCPE to hold the sidepipe cover upright as was also suggested. I had practiced on some old stock and also found that you can re-peen rivets that have already been installed with the tool. Someone had mentioned this in a earlier response and they are correct.
I bought the 3/16 x 5.5 in tool.
Thanks for all the help.

You and I must have gone to different schools together, I was doing this again yesterday to a 65 from Chicago. The impact method makes it almost fun and you find yourself going around redoing rivets that have been hand peened before. It is a simple tool that works wonderfully

I haven't done my 74's rivets yet, but I did buy the assortment of tools as suggested. Looks to be quality stuff and as soon as I find some free time I'll be using them!! Thanks again!!

Tony Z -- Saw your red firehawk at the ABC cruise. Came by a couple of times however you were not there. Good looking car you have there.

Thank you for the compliment!! I'm sorry I missed you, as I would have liked to have met. I figured you didn't come due to the weather..........I almost didn't go myself. Did you have your 66 there, because I did not remember seeing it. I had alot of friends and family show up so I was spending time looking at all the vehicles with them. I was also at the GM show at Agresta Pontiac in Williamstown this weekend. Turned out to be a nice show. We'll have to definitely get together one time so we can meet and I can check out your car. Hopefully I'll have my 74 going shortly!!

Did not have the car at the ABC show. Two reason; weather was too threatening and I was told they had sold out all the spaces via pre-registration. There were a few empty spaces along what looked like "vette row" due to the weather and no shows.
I think this was the first Agresta show I missed in the last 3-4 years. I used to have a 67 GTO 335 HP and still are fond of the older ones (64-69). The newer ones are also great I just happen to like the older ones.
I also attend the show at Crispin Square in Marlton once in a while. That show is on a Sunday once a month and is put on by the Old Goats Club and South Jersey Pontiac I think. I also believe they are the same folks that put on the Agresta show.
Fuddruckers at Cross Keys is this Friday. If I get the car back together, I will try and make it. If not I will be there without the car. Right now I have sidepipe parts all over the garage floor waiting for some correct reference material and parts.
We might go to Fox Run -- I think that is this Saturday.
I will look for your car.

They've had bad weather two years in a row at that ABC show, lets hope next year is better. I'm getting tired of driving an hour in the rain!!
It's good to hear you had a 67 GTO, I like the old goats myself. You are right about the South Jersey Pontiac Club putting on the Agresta show and Crispin Square Cruise Nights. I'm a member of their club and they are a great group of people.
I'd like to make Fuddruckers one night but right now things are a little too busy at work. Maybe Fox Run if things look good, but I wanted to let you know that it's the 3rd Saturday of the month and not the 2nd. The 2nd is Pike Creek Shopping Center off of 7 which is near me. Nice cruise night also with a couple hundred cars.
If you need any info about DE please let me know and I'll do my best to help you!! Hope to see that 66 one day!!

Thanks for the DE offer and the correction re Fox Run.
Pike Creek you say --- hmmmmm
have a good weekend

Pike Creek is a nice cruise night...............right in the K Mart shopping center. Drop me a line if you decide to go and I'll try and swing by for a little bit. Work has been crazy lately!
Have a great weekend also!!
