Heard it on the radio....the DNR recovered 1000 +/- snakeheads from the ill fated Crofton pond. Apparently all "fish" in the pond are deceased. BUT, the saga continues......
I heard recently that somebody caught a Snakehead in the Patapsco River....right in the middle of Baltimore's Inner Harbor :) That's at least 20 miles "as the crow flies" from the Patuxent River in Crofton. If the fish got from Crofton to Baltimore, it had to swim out into the Chesapeake Bay, and then into the Inner Harbor. Are they lurking there now  I've heard no further updates on the "swan removal" problem. However, now they're warning deer hunters to be wary of "chronic wasting disease" in the local deer population. Seems it's like "Mad Cow" disease. If you eat 'em, you're gonna get it! Chuck

Chuck, when are you going to tell us the rest of the story?...Any day we will be finding out that this catastrophe is self-correcting...the deer AND the snake head fish are also infected with flesh eating bacteria which consume both the eatER and the eatEE preventing further spread of the disease.
Animal rights advocates (vegetarians) will finally be able to get their message across to the general population about how it feels to be a animal protein source. :D :D :D

Vegetarian- ever wonder where that word came from? It's an old aboriginal word that means 'lousy hunter'
"Bow and Arrow" season for deer starts this weekend, I'm told. I guess if a deer staggers up to you, looking sickly.....glaring, glassy eyes, etc, asking to be shot, you shouldn't eat it :) Makes sense to me. Strange times...."Mad Deer" disease, Honking Swans, Crapping Canadian Geese, Snakehead fish......maybe flesh-eating bacteria WILL infect all of them. :) I think I'll move to Montana. Chuck
Ah...the "Snakehead".....also known as the Chinese Walking Fish....an alien species introduced into a pond in Maryland and allowed to breed. They're voracious eaters....exterminating all native species. They'll own the Chesapeake Bay if allowed to breed. They poisoned the pond and recovered 1000 or so of the critters.....BUT....the mystery continues, as another "big one" was supposedly caught in Baltimore's Inner Harbor....miles and miles from the original pond......Think of it like the Giant Asian Carp working their way into the Great Lakes. :) Chuck
LOL, that's kind of a weird name for a fish "The Walking Fish..." anyways, I'm glad I heard about this. About how large are they known to get? I'm with you on this. They must not be allowed to take over the Chesapeake Bay...
'Snakehead' is also a name used to describe asian gangsters, particularly those involved in human smuggling. I've often wondered if there was a reasonable comparison between the fish and the gangster other than the obvious (ie: voracious and vicious).
They get pretty big. Some people caught a few in the 20+ inch range, and these started out as "aquarium" size fish. It's called the walking fish because it can walk over dry land on it's pectoral fins. Can also live out of water for about 3 days. Nasty critters which will literally destroy all native species. So....future generations won't be going Bass fishing.....they'll be Snakehead fishing. :) Chuck
