Default GM body codes

Sorry for the stupid questions but what does the C in C1-C8 corvette mean is it just for corvette? Did corvette not have a regular GM body code because it wasn’t a Fischer body?

i thought it was the GM body code like A body for GTO, GS455 or F body for camaro/firebird but C body for 50’s to 70’s is for big Buick, olds and caddy models

in means nothing but Corvette. that term came out around 1996 when the C5 or 1997 car came out.

Y Code was for early 60’s skylark, F 85 and tempest and for 80’s and later RWD performance cars which I guess includes corvette

but what about prior to 80’s?

Of all the years I have been reading up on these cars I never read where GM gave a code letter no know my 94 FSM stated Y body. I would think that started with the 84 model. So not sure on earlier models
