Not 100% sure of this, but midyears use the boot with the "X" on the back. I assume 68's MIGHT use the same. Repro boots are smooth....no "X" ribs. Chuck
Again, I'm no 68 expert, but I've only seen black. Maybe the gray you've seen is a faded, chalky black. There are probably several million of these "correct" boots laying in junkyards all over the USA. :) Chuck
Re: Alternator positive pole boot (Chuck Gongloff)
FWIW, here is a pic of my '67 alternator with a new Lectric Limited harness. It's hard to make out, but the lettering on top of the boot says....HI 508. Not sure how correct it is, but it's good enough for me. http://temp.corvetteforum.net/classi...ternator.1.jpg
FXT, thanks for the picture and the information. Lectric Limited is in the Chicago area, I am going to call them. They share a building with Chicago Corvette and they have a small junk yard in the back.
Here's a pic of the alternator boot on my 63. Notice the cross or "X" pattern. This is the same boot as is on my 69, but since the alternator is rotated, it was easier to get a picture of the 63. I have the original wiring harnesses on both cars.
I do believe that this is the "correct" boot. I think Patrick's is a Lectric Limited generic replacement. Chuck
Re: Alternator positive pole boot (Chuck Gongloff)
Chuck, there is an "X" or cross pattern on mine, although you may not be able to see it from the pic. Oh well, I guess I'll have to live with a generic repop, don't have St. Louis air in my tires either!!
Lawton54, am I to assume that your boot is no longer good? I just went down to the basement in my "bucket of bolts" and, knowing that I had a rubber boot, I pulled it out. It has the X on it andis like new! It is a junkyard "special". Yours if you want it.
Gary
Tsk, tsk, Patrick. Did you know that you'll lose about ONE whole point for that incorrect boot? :D Also, rumor has it that factory correct air WILL be available soon. Just send in the build date of your car, and you'll get "correct" air with JUST the right amount of pollen and other "period correct" air pollutants. Chuck

It will also have to contain at least 20ppm of fiberglass dust if it's "real" St. Louis air; samples will be taken and checked via scanning electron microscopes and gas spectro-chromatographs :D
