Hello, I am restoring my 1963 Vette. I found a block #3782870 and on the pad in front of the right side head it had B163426 and 0104SB. Any help deciphering theses numbers would be appreciated. Thanks
Right casting number, but wrong engine - it's a 327/300 out of a '62-'64 passenger car built at Baltimore; the 2870 block was used in a wide variety of Chevrolet applications.
What is the casting date of the block? It's located on the bellhousing flange on the passengers side behind the distributor. It should be something like A 1 3, where A is the month (A=Jan., B=Feb.,), The 1 is the day of the month, and the 3 is the year, 1963.
Also, you want a Flint block, not a Tonawanda block. Flint blocks have single digit year casting dates, like A 1 3, whereas Tonawanda blocks have two digit year casting dates, like A 1 63. There are also a lot of embossed and debossed "T"'s on Tonawanda blocks.
This MIGHT be a correct block for your restoration if the casting date matches up with the build date of the car. You COULD have it restamped, but I'm not opening that can of worms. :) Chuck
What's in front of "0104SB" - a "T" (Tonawanda), or an "F" (Flint)? You can also identify a Flint block visually by the little 1/8" NPT square-head pipe plug at about 11 o'clock (facing the front of the engine) about an inch from the outside of the timing cover (Tonawanda blocks didn't have the hole or the plug).
