Default Horn Rebuild Kit

Any one know where I get the rivets and gaskets for the horn. Zip does not carry the simple rebuild kit anymore, and I don't want to pay for the metal diaphragms.

Paragon will sell you the rivets and gaskets by themself. They do not advertize it, but they will. The rivets are about $.20 each, but I make my own gaskets now as the last few that I bought had shrunk and did not fit. I agree that the replacment diaphrams are junk! They are too thick and do not make as loud a sound as originals. I re-use originals whenever possible.

when the horn doesn't sound, that means the diaphram gas gone south?

If it doesn't "honk", could be several things. The diaphragm is only one of those items. Could be electrical...the coil/magnets, etc. Could be rust/dirt. The replacement diaphragms for both high and low are now "repro'ed" with the same thickness, whereas original diaphragms used one thickness for low, and a thinner for high. I think lows were .020 and highs were .015 inch. That's why often high note horns won't work with the repro diaphragms.

There's a real science to rebuilding these, as you not only have the mechanical and electrical elements, but you also have the "tuning" element. The rivets must be set like you're tuning a snare drum...with the same "tightness". Otherwise, the diaphragm won't vibrate correctly. Two of my friends, and Mason Dixon Chapter NCRS members have a side business rebuilding horns. They use original parts whenever possible. They are always buying swap meet horns to pirate for original parts. They had the rivets custom made and use a special press to install them. It's a labor intensive job. I've watched them do it. To George:

Interesting comment about the diaphragm being bad and equating it to the south. Down south we would have said it went north.

Dennis Portka has been rebuilding Corvette horns for about 25 years, and it takes him about 8 hours per horn; very tedious, more "art" than "science"

Thanks for the tip about Paragon. Called them and ordered the rivets, no problem. Also ordered to gaskets for templates.
