Can someone explain what a "frame on" entails... Just sounds hokey to me....

Thanx,

The way I understand it is a "frame on" restoration means a restoring the car without removing the body. A "frame off" restoration indicates the body was removed. The terms "body off" or "body on" restorations seem to give a better description of what is actually done.

64mp's got it right. Don't know how or when the "frame off" nomenclature started but the term "body off" is more correct.

With the body removed from the car, you strip the frame...start with a bare frame, and reassemble/restore everything. Chuck

doing a frame on resto is like freshing things up. Ie like a repaint, new interior, engine work, detailed under the hood, and a gone over the chassie. a frame off is redoing everything that the factory did

Put it this way. A frame off resto is when everything with the frame is pulled from the car. A frame on resto is when everything is pulled from the car without the frame coming off. Therefore, a few parts cannot be refurbished.
