Default Bloomington "Survivor" questions

I plan to take my 67 BB Cpe (3 Star Award) to Bloomington next year for an attempt at the "Survivor" certifcation. The car missed by 2 1/2 points on the chassis from being a 4 Star Bowtie car.

In order to pass the "Survivor", the car must make the 40 miles run. With this in mind, the fuel pump just started leaking, and correcting this is not an option. Also discovered that the reason that it heats up is probably because the fan clutch is history.

Knowing these have to be replaced or repaired, this questioin is which way to jump. Supposedly both can be rebuilt, and that would be my preference, but for judging puposes, since they would no longer be original, should I just go with repro parts, or even just off the shelf parts? I have no plans to restore, as I want to keep it as original as posible, but I do want to get it certified.

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Merry Christmas to all.

Get the pump and the fan rebuilt (without repainting or cleaning either part, in hopes of keeping the original finishes in place) or hunt down the correct NOS parts to replace them.. Good luck there!!! either way you have no choice but the fix or replace these parts.... or you could push your car the 40 miles

just my 2 cents... lucky you for having such a nice original car

If you had the '67 up at Windsor, then you were right next to my Silver '68 Coupe on the Bowtie Judging field. I have taken 3 Corvettes through the "Survivor" process at Bloomington. My Orange '74, Yellow '80 and Silver '68. The "Survivor" judging is relatively EASY compared to what you went through at Windsor. Survivor judging is not at all as harsh or even as thorough. Whereas with NCRS it takes 85% on interior & exterior, 80% on chassis and engine compartment, "Survivor" is 50% across the board in all four categories. The judges also do not even have the "books" or manuals to check numbers & such. As the judges are looking at your exterior, interior, chassis & engine compartment, they ask themselves "Does this interior "APPEAR" to be at least 50% or more "ORIGINAL""???. Same with exterior, "Does this exterior "APPEAR" to be at least 50% or better ORIGINAL""??? And so forth for the other two categories. Also, with "Survivor", you need to only "pass" three out of the four categories to obtain a "Survivor" Award.
With "Survivor", you can have replacement tires, battery, shocks, exhaust, belts, hoses, etc.-the judges are just looking to see if the engine compartment's been repainted-the chassis "repainted", the carpet & door panels changed, etc. The car can be maintained with newer maintenance items and still be "Unrestored". A new fan clutch and fuel pump WOULD NOT keep the car from "passing" the engine portion of the judging so long as the engine compartment IS NOT repainted, the engine REPAINTED and other pieces in the engine compartment "replated or restored".

Paul:

Thanks for the info. This makes me feel a lot better about what I am having to do. With this in mind, I'll put the new parts on and hang on to the old ones, in the event that they may be needed down the road if some one other than me wants to do a restoration on it. I may go ahead and have them rebuilt to have handy.

I'm looking forward to the getting the application completed as soon after the first of the year as Bloomington posts it.

Thanks again, and Merry Christmas.
