It's more than just the speed of the actual servers that can make a difference. Number of jumps between your ISP and where the servers are actually located can make a big difference as well. For instance, I'm in north Florida, and the pings and throughput tests to Atlanta are MUCH quicker than to an equivalent server in Los Angeles. Distance DOES make a difference. And not all data centers are equal in the level of service that they offer. Faster bandwidth costs money. And any data center located right next to a major trunk will have better throughput than one located out in the boonies (relatively speaking).
Plus I would imagine a huge site like this has several servers involved that must all play nicely together.
Moving to new servers is no easy nor painless task....
What makes so many here think the new servers are in use? I don't think they are.
