For the last several days, on certain topics I'm scanning, an icon appears in the black margins both above and below the posts on the page. When I mouse over it, a dialog box saying "submit to reddit" appears. Anybody know what this is?

the reddit button is the smart way to get your content submitted to and discussed on reddit. pick the button you like from below, and then copy/paste the code into your HTML editor.

"JT", if I understand what you're saying, this is some sort of connection to a social media site? If so, OK, as long as it's not some "phishing" scam or spyware link....

That is correct. It is a social site and not a scam. Somewhat like using Twitter/Facebook/etc. It's optional for those who want an easy way to "promote" the content to another site for social reasons.
