Default C4 Problem.

Hi guys, can anyone out there help me with this one. My dash panel has suddenly decided to go mental. It was working properly yesterday, but today I turned the ignition on, there was nothing for a few seconds and then the panel illuminated. It was totally scrambled , as if it was a DVD on fast playback. I took the unit out to see if everything was ok with the 2 plug connections. I used an electrical cleaner and put it back in. Same thing again as before. I went indoors for a cup of tea and after about 25 minutes I gave it another go. The Panel lit up as soon as the ignition key was turned. All ok I thought but a few minutes later back to scrambled state again. Is the dash panel controlled by a relay?. I ask as when the key is turned, I can hear a click which seems to be somewhere in the engine bay. Would be grateful for any help you can give. Thanks.
