I just bought a 1984 Corvette from my father-in-law as a birthday gift for my wife. I don't have that kind of money, but the deal was just too good to pass up and the wife's birthday was just days away so it worked out well all the way around. I'm a car-guy, but I've never owned a Corvette.
My father-in-law is the original owner and he's fanatical about maintenance and originality. He's the guy who has every document and every receipt ever generated in relation to the car. I know where the car has been and exactly what has been done (and not done) to it. He bought a Z06 a few years ago and with almost three times the HP and a whole lot else going for it he's become bored with the '84. Before these he owned a '67 with 427.
The car is black with grey leather interior, automatic transmission, and it only has 52,xxx miles on the clock. The tires are new as is the exhaust - more on that later.
We replaced the valve cover gaskets, headlights, a tail light, and a dozen other little things. Still to be done is replacement of the rear hatch seal, interior light door switch troubleshooting, and a dozen other such minor repairs.
I found the exhaust drone to be awful. The mufflers have dual outlets with turn-downs just like the originals. After much research I learned that the originals had the inner outlet on each muffler blocked - they're just for aesthetics. I blocked ours with ***** of foil and I found tremendous improvement in sound with no noticeable drop in performance. I tack-welded a couple of fender washers inside the inner outlets which mostly blocks the ports and this provided a great improvement. They can't be seen and if I want to remove them for some reason I can give a twist and pop them loose.
I'd really like to replace the wheels but that's down the line and after the more pressing issues have been corrected.
I've already found a lot of great information on the site and I look forward to participating in the future.
Welcome Terry & Kristy and congrats. I'm Jeni Knutson and I grew up with Kristy, my husband Dave & I have been busy with our 88 35th anniversary that hasn't had so much care in it's lifetime.
