Default Profiled by a state trooper today.

So I'm in traffic, in the fast lane, and I see a state trooper coming up fast in my rear view. I waited for my oppertunity to move right and did, let him pass, then moved back into the left lane passing the cars on my right. I was doing 64 in a 65.

I see up ahead a woman in a mini cooper blocking the trooper's way. He eventually passed her on the right instead of waiting for her to move. A few more miles down he pulls into the slow lane and I pass along with the row of cars in front of me, staying in the left since the road forks and that's where I needed to be.

Now after the fork there's a merge and I see a silver celica coming up. She had the right of way so I slowed down to let her pass. She must have been uncertain in the merge and slowed down herself. I just backed it down and let her continue in front.

At this time, the girl is going 60 in a 65 so I moved into the left, passed, then moved back into the middle lane at about 68.

About 1/4 mile after that, I have flashing lights behind me. "Son of a..." Pulled over, got the documentation request and he looked it all over.
"Do you know what I pulled you over for?"
"No, Sir."
"You were in the left lane for about 4 miles back there and you were talgating some vehicles."
My jaw literally dropped.

"You have any prior violations?"
"No, Sir. None that I'm aware of."

I've never been pulled over for a moving violation. My buffer zone between the car in front of me and my own is more than adequate. I was in sub-speed limit traffic and passing the cars on my right. I've never had any problems on this stretch of road which I've been driving on every day for the past 5 years.

At this time there's about a 10 minute wait while he goes back to his car and works with my information. I can see that he wasn't alone in the car and my paranoia was kicking in. I'm sure I was picked out because of the Vette. I was sure they thought I was a punk kid. I'm absolutely certain they saw the absence of a front plate.

I was gripping the wheel firmly, imagining the skyrocketing insurance rates when he came back to my window along with two written warnings; one for the supposed tailgating and one for the failure to keep right. Thank goodness he gave me a break! Granted it would have been better not being pulled over at all, but at least I wasn't going to have to pay out the nose because of what I believe to be unjust accusations.

Now I'm nervous about driving home, back to work tomorrow, and the next day... I've always wanted a car that stood out from the others but not for this reason.

I heard on the radio just yesterday that Jersey is going to be tough on drivers, you were lucky. And as much as L.E.O.'s say that they don't target Corvettes.....come on, everyone knows they stand out in a crowd.

I was just talking to a coworker that was ticketed last night for having his rear wheel cross the white line while moving into an exit lane. I'm all for cracking down on dangerous drivers, but things are starting to get a little out of hand.

Lucky you just got a warning. From what you describe it sounds like What highway were you on? And to say you are tailgating or failure to keep left in NJ during the morning rush is absolute absurdity. They can write tickets non-stop all day if they enforced that on everyone.

LEO's targeting Corvettes??? No way!!

BTW, didn't you hear about us getting paced by a trooper on I87 going up to Bear Mt. Granted, we did fly by at 130 mph but I don't think he actually saw that or else we'd all still be in jail

Glad you didn't get a ticket!

That sucks!!! when I was in grad school the use to pull me over all the time, but I only got warnings. Some of there reasons for stoping me were: 1) your car fits the description of a car we are looking for 2) you look like you were weaving in traffic.... However, I am happy to hear that they didnot give you a ticket...

I just love it when I'm doing the limit or under and being the safest
driver I can be and you get people darting in and out. I may have
10 car lengths between me and the car in front and all of a sudden
some moron needs to be changing lanes and pulls right in front of
my bumper.

If a LEO looks at me right then, I'm tailgating.

What road were you on?

I-80 Westbound Parsippany. What cheeses me most of all is that the woman in the Mini was lane sitting right in front of them forcing the trooper to pass on the right. But of course it was an older woman in a Mini rather than a mid 20's kid in a Vette.

I understand that the POs themselves are just doing their jobs, but - quotas or not - I'm sure they are getting pressure to crack down on us from the retarded politicians we elected.

At least you didn't get a ticket.

What is the legal significance of a warning?

I guess if that Warning is entered into a computer database , then the next time you are stopped they will know you got a warning and they might not be so kind to you !

But yes.....at least he didnt get a ticket or ALEXed(which is slang for anally searched)!!

That's what I thought.

The dude has the mirrored aviator glasses, and those big boots, and he puts one foot up on the fender as he rips the Warning from out of his ticket book . . .

"I don't know how the law is where you come from, but you're in Morris County now, boy. We don't cotton to your kind around here. You and your fancy Corvette. Consider yourself warned, and don't come back, now. Ya hear? We'll have you workin' the chain gang the next time. You know what they'd do to a pretty young boy like you in a chain gang?"
