Default EZ Pass Question...

I just got an EZ Pass, but they sent me two things in the mail. One is that little white thing that is like an oversize credit card... The other is this large black bar, about the width of a license plate. I've seen it mounted on the front of some cars, but do you really need it?

I'd rather just have the little pale white thing and hold it in the window when I go through instead of attaching that black bar or sticking the white thing to the window.

Is this possible? Please excuse my incompetence on the subject, I'm not sure if I need both or just one of them. But for all that stupidity at least I know the electrical engineering behind them

You only need one. The white one is for mounting on the inside of the windshield. The black is for external mounting. If you use the white one pick up the suction cup holder at a car parts store.

I use the black external one under the hood of my C5. Works like a charm even through the high speed lanes

Seen tons of people do this and after EG confirmed it I went out and ordered an external one.

That's only true for cars with non-metallic hoods, though. Right?

Kurt, I cant beloive no one gave you the technical answer yet... It all depends what kind of windshield you have in your car... the white box will not work on some windshields if there is metal in the glass. For instance on my saab I need to use the black bar. Safest bet would be to use the black bar only. And either return the white tag or leave it somewhere out of the car. EZPASS is known for errors and you dont want to get charged twice!

On another note... one should keep in mind that EZPASS has the capability and discretion to send you a speeding ticket. All they need to do is calculate the rate of speed by the time it took you to get from one toll to the next.. sounds crazy but I know people who have received tickets this way. So be careful..

There is a list of cars that the white box supposedly won't work on. Corvette is (at least is was the last time I looked) on the list. I use the white box, in the windshield, and it works fine.

BTW: I once had it in my console without the foil wrapping, and forgot I had it in there. It still registered.

I've also heard of people getting tickets based on EZ Pass. Based on our rights to confront our accuser under the 6th Amendment, I believe they could only be "fine-only", and not "points" tickets.

Maybe with the time you spent respectfully doing 40 mph, the whole trip averaged out to 65 mph??

So basically I can use the white thing in the window? I borrowed JDogg's for the foliage cruise and just held it in the window when we hit the toll, it worked...

This speeding thing worries me, though, especially on a place like the Garden State Parkway where they have tolls every 5 miles or so. I average about 85 MPH when I drive on the highway, if they really hand out tickets then I think I may have to throw this thing out.

I never heard of anyone getting a speeding ticket based on avg speed in NJ with ez-pass. The ACLU would have a field day if they did and no one would have them. You get warnings and can get an ez-pass suspension if you speed through the toll plazas. I.e., the limit is 15 mph in NJ through the regular plazas, if you speed through there you get warnings and then other penalties if you keep doing it.

They took down a lot of the GSP toll plazas, now you just pay double going in one direction.

If you want to hold it up to the window you can, personally I just use the suction cup holder; I don't see any issues with having it mounted.

I have only heard of speeding tickets when travelling faster than the posted speed limit through the toll. If people were getting tickets in the mail via point to point speed calculations everyone would throw out the EZ-PAss....

I know I would.....

Even if the urban legend about EZ Pass speeding tickets is true, I think it will be a LONG time before they will be able to give you a points-based ticket.

Now, discovery in criminal or civil litigation. That is another issue to be concerned about. I haven't heard that much on that subject yet. The black box in your car or GPS information - even more fun.

See? We pay to train you to defend our rights, and our country, as given to us by our forefathers - and then - we pay some politicians to do nothing but sit around and think of ways to take them away.

Just make sure your plate is registered with their site then you will not have any problems. I went about 2 months without a transponder and on my ez-pass statement I saw MVOVR on it instead of the transponder ID. If you don't have your plate registered and you blow through one expect a fine in the mail that you can disbute by just adding your ez-pass account and sending it back.

Take note though NY, NY, PA, VA are all different. If you get a NJ ez-pass then NY will not be able to read your plate thus you will get a ticket. The same works for all of the departments. I spent a long time this summer arguing the fact they should have 1 centrailzed computer for everyone that has ez-pass, but of course that went no where...

GPS in some states is becoming a real thing so they can tax you by miles. I think 2 states are testing it and then want to charge you at the pump or something like that. It really is stupid, but who knows in a few years Tickets will follow...

1. EZ-Pass will work on the C6 windshield, it also works on my Trailblazer even though their web page says it won't.
2. There was a recent newspaper article stating that NJ doesn't enforce the 15 MPH limit on the GSP toll booths, not sure about the NJTPK.
3. I travel the GSP every day and never heard of someone getting a ticket with EZ-Pass. Also with tolls removed it is a long distance in betwween some of them.
4. With an average speed of 30 MPH at rush hour in my area, I couldn't speed if I wanted too!
