Yah - it's a good lesson for him. Dents all down the side of his car, but nary a scratch on the SUV. The SUV driver saw how he got forced out by the car merging in and said he didn't want to file a report if we'd just cover the (minimal) cost to fill the the scratches his SUV got.
And my son wonders why I don't let him drive the Vette yet???

You should try driving in Manila! OMG! It's a test of guts. Basically, if the nose gets in first, you have the right of way. The buses and trucks drive the same EXACT way!
France is the same way. They wear their scratches and dents as a badge of honor. Germany on the other hand (where my son learned to drive), EVERYONE follows the rules to the letter - hence his incomprehension why someone would merge from the right even though they clearly don't have right of way.
