As most of you know I am building a detached garage. I originally planned for NO windows, mainly for security reasons. However, I'm having second thoughts and am thinking about ordering the garage doors with a window panel and the walk in door with half glass, what do you think?
Rex, difficult to judge your decision on no windows not knowing your neigborhood but Natural light is always a big plus. Also if you can open them every once in a while it really helps in ventalation and reducing that "garage smell". If your worried about security how about some "windows" made with clear glass block? I've see some people use them in situations where they want light but want privacy/security? Also smaller windows higher up are effective as well. I just like being cheap and using some good old fashion sun light instead of flicking on a switch. Good luck!
I recommed the "bay" doors with windows in them. Make sure the windows are the top section and no one will be able to see in, but it lets light in.
I do not recommend a side door with windows. Too easy to punch a glass pane out and open the door=get in. I would get a solid steel side door that opens OUT. That way it doesn't take up interior space when opened, won't hit the cars and harder to break into. Can't kick it in.
Just my .02 (from my garage building experience) :D

I agree with 82dukman, sounds like great advice. Windows at the top of the garage doors, and no glass on the side door. Some sunlight will be nice though.
Hey Rex, seriously, depending on if you are going to put a room above it, how about skylights? Not a bad idea, but you lose storage area above it if it is stick framed.
The first post of mine is what I did to my garage when I built it and I'm very happy I did
you can have glass in the side door, just get a deadbolt that needs a key on either side.
I think you guys might be a little paranoid. I've been to John's unless he is out of town I think it would be pretty hard not to notice someone sneaking around the backyard. Also if you have good neighbors, that shouldn't be a worry.
Glass in the bay doors is a must, the more natural light you can get in the better.
Have you considered skylights?
