I called JC Whitney and they told me all of their helmets (cheapos) had a Snell rating of 95. What is the NHRA requirement for a 13 - 15 second car? Are most of the good helmets given a Snell 2000 rating? Do the numbers mean anything? ie, how do you go from 95 to 2000? Sounds like year? 95 = 1995? Are Snell ratings like different versions of Microsoft Windows?? :) MJ
Yup, the #s are the years. 2000 is just the most recent version of their safety standard. But, at Englishtown, as long as it's hard, and covers your head, I think you'll be okay! Seriously, I see guys using motocross and bike helmets and nobody says a thing. Hell, the helmets you rent are basically bike helmets. The Snell ratings are mostly used for road racing and autocross. And SN95 is still acceptable for all the road racing/autocross I've seen. If NHRA does have a standard, I'm not aware of it, sorry, somebody else on here will probably know for sure.

Re: Snell Ratings (BillY2KFRC)
In short NHRA helmet rule: E.T. cars (13.99 or quicker) but in New Jersey state DMV law states "all" cars must use a helmet meeting SNELL 90, 95, SFI 31.1, 31.2, 41.2 Specs.

Thanks! That website is very informative, and thanks for answering my questions! Now I have to ask JC Whitney if their helmets are SA-95 or M-95 and I now know what the difference is! At Etown I got by with my bike (bicycle :) ) helmet, but at Island they made me rent a helmet, which is kind of icky and I hope to avoid in the future. So..... to spend $40 - $70 for elcheapo or just buy a Bell MAG 4 for $212. MJ
