So I'm about 12 days from moving from Texas to the Marland/DC area. I will be working at the Pentagon but trying to live a solid 30-40 minutes away at least. I'm not sure what area I will be living yet, but what can you local folks tell me about the area.
Yeah, it depends on if Ft. George Meade has a house open, if not I am looking at the Laurel/silver springs area, I think
I just did that same commute..its about 1.5hrs by train from ft meade to Pentagon. Look at Bowie area..closer, drivable, and commute time is less. If children are an issue ft meade schools not good either. You need any advice just let me know. Who are you working for in the p'gon?

I'll be working for the Air Force Service Watch Cell. My wife is now looking in the Bowie and O'denton (sp) area. What do you recommend school wise? I have 3 little boys, 2 who are in school.
hmm interesting. Looks like we found a couple townhouse/apartments with a garage in the Bowie/Odenton(sp?) areas that we will look at when we get there. I'm pretty excited today is my last day of work, just have to outprocess medical then I sit around for 2 weeks before I can leave LOL.
Winter weather isnt usually too bad.....Problem is bad drivers......Just a little rain here in Balto. area causes enough people to panic that it screws up a normal decent trip.....Word of warning tho.....When they call for snow stay away from the grocery stores.....Folks here panic and buy enough milk and tp to last until June when the snow (if it does snow) is long gone.......
Live East of Laurel, off the BW parkway. Ft Meade to the Pentagon would be long, but I've known others to do it routinely. I drove from Laurel to Ft Belvoir daily for over sixteen years. Also drove into Falls Church, VA for a number of years.
However, the Bowie Odenton area would probably be better for you. The big thing on traffic is if you can get your work schedule to put you on the road outside the rush hour. Can save a lot of time and driving stress. Can't speak to the schools, no kids.
Best of luck.

Although I live in Northern Baltimore County, you may want to check out Columbia, MD. Annapolis is very $$$, but Bowie, Arnold is nice. Stay away from most areas of PG county, pretty rough neighborhoods, but Montgomery County is really expensive. As for Virginia, my son works in D.C. and lives in a sh*thole apt. in Arlington and is paying $1200.00 a month. Good luck, I keep us posted.

Sounds like San Antonio. "Water?!?! From the sky?!?!? PANIC!!!!"
As far as my work schedule its look like it will be 545-1745 or 1745-0545 depending on if I am nights or days.
I think most of my searching now online will be towards the Odenton/Bowie areas, until I can actual get there and see what everything is like. I will look into Columbia and Arnold too.

Is the weather pretty snowy in the winter? LOL.
Piney Orchard schools in Odenton are about the best around this area.
It can get pretty snowy and icy for sure...don't worry because most things close down.except for the watch I was the First Sgt for the unit before I left..
Traffic is going to be heavy at those hours. Suggestion 1, buy a beater to drive in. Drivers on the beltways are maniacs and they dont't give a crap about your ride. AAA has just declared the beltway as the worst commute in the country surpassing L.A. Its also in the top 5 deadliest road for traffic fatalities.

Oh yeah, 24 hour mission essential blah blah blah. I'm used to it lol.
Excellent news about the beltway commute Time to look at beaters lol.
I've lived in Columbia for over 12 years - excellent schools (Howard County) and the quality of life is great for th kids, but, be prepared to pay for it. Columbia charges an annual "Columbia Special Assessment Tax" based on the apprasied value of your home. This typically equates to an average of $800-$1,000 / yr. over and above your property taxes to pay for the ammenities. Just outside Columbia is nice in Ellicott City...with no extra tax. Butn again, the house can be a bit pricey.
Definitely look into a beater, especially for winter. Maryland has started using that mix of road salt and molasses to help the salt stick to the roads. Problem is, it sticks to everything else too, like your undercarriage, wheels and body work! It'll actually turn light colored cars a nasty brown over time.
I live in Haymarket, VA. Great area out Rte 66. I commute a couple of exits south of the Pentagon each day. 37 miles/35 minutes at 5:15am. Great area. 9 golf courses within 5 miles.
