I have Geico. My car was flooded at the Jersey Shore about 5 or 6 years ago.
The water had receded by the time we realized what happened (it occurred overnight). Water came up as high as the center console (had water in it). When the adjuster came out, he first said that they typically don't total a car until water reaches the dashboard. I reminded him that it was salt water and I showed him the location of the BCM. He then said he'd recommend it to be totalled and it was. Make sure you point that out to the adjuster.
As others have said and I think you agree. You don't want the future electrical headaches. The water had already receded by the time we woke up the next morning. They way we first discovered what had happended was the odd electrical occurances. My trunk had popped itself, my father's Mercedes window had rolled itself down and the neighbor's BMW opened its moonroof.
for the most part USAA is totaling all of the flood vehicles from Sandy because of the salt water intrusion. So keep an eye out for good deals on cars. very likely could be one of these cars...
The neighbor and I are now sharing a generator. It is backfed into the house to run the boiler. I need to hunt down some gas now to help him out and for my car.
The vette has over 1/2 a tank go gas so that will handle getting me to and from work for a week.
Monday 10/29/2012, I was faced with a very difficult dilemma. In preparing for Hurricane Sandy, I had to decide where to park my 2012 Centennial edition Grand Sport convertible. My two choices were in the underground garage at my apartment building (with no history of flooding since built in 1974) or on the outside parking deck (and risk damage from falling and flying debris. I chose the garage, and put my car in the corner farthest from the entrance of the garage (highest point available). I obviously made the wrong choice.
The storm surge washed away adjacent buildings, destroyed concrete retaining walls, and flooded the garage with over a foot of sea water. it wasn't until almost 48 hours later that the car became reachable. (I have posted pictures in a photo album titled "Casualty of Hurricane Sandy"). The car had no electric power. Using my emergency key, I opened the trunk and released the driver's door. Water had entered the cabin to approximately the level of the seat's sitting surface.
I think I already know the answer, but does anyone know if and how the car can be salvaged? I only had the car for 6 1/2 months
sucks about your car, if you could have got it up on jack stands or cinder blocks looks like the rims would have only got a little wet. best of luck getting a new toy...
A huge shout out to Belmar and the surronding Wall Twp. communities. Police and National Guard have the town locked down for residence only (Weds. was a bit of a free for all, but after that, done) And don't be outside after 7pm without a medical emergency. The Boro's website gives a day by day accounting of new developments (with no gas or electric, we're all living somewhere else). Resturants are offering free food to those who need it and the DPW is sending crews around to pump out basements for free. This has been a huge PITA and damn costly in lives and property, but it is wonderful to see a community come together when it hits the fan.
Just got my internet back last night. I lost power from monday night til thursday night, but I had a generator that my son and I would run from 5 pm til when we went to bed at 10 pm. I always had natural gas for my stove and hot water heater, so we could cook and take hot showers. It could have been alot worse, but we were ok. However, my son's apt in Hoboken is inaccessible because the streets are flooded and there is no power. He is on the 8th floor, so there was no damage to his things.
The only bad thing here was that a tree fell on a neighbors house. It took off the chimney and put a hole in th roof, but it didn't destroy the place. Probably only about 5 to $10, 000 worth in damages. What sucks is that they have the house on the market, since they already bought another home.
I have power back and if anyone needs anything in my area, just pm me - I'll check a couple times a day. I'm in Roselle, just outside Elizabeth, NJ. Unfortunately, it has to be local because gas is in very short supply here. Good luck to everyone still dealing with this.
Received some minor house and property damage. Next door neighbor's house burnt down at height of storm. Blocked roads by trees hampered the fire fighters. They are safe as are their pets.
No power for six days. Gas is now plentiful with no lines at local stations. I'm in the southern Toms River area. Going to consider a whole house generator. Had tried to get a transfer switch installed last year but it never materialized.
^^^, Sorry Crusher, just couldn't get there, put we can this week if you'd like. As far as Gas, Manchester EXXON on RT 37 on the border of Manchester and Toms River hasn't had any lines that I've seen or been in after 8pm.
Wow that is crazy, just down the road (37&N.Hampton) traffic it is backed up trying to get into that "WAWA". (Many near collisions)
Good to know...thanks.

Good for them doing the right thing. Yeah, I'm not touching any salvage title car.
Was at my MIL's place in Manahawkin this entire weekend. She got about 4 feet of water in her garage, but must have had about 2 feet of random debris everywhere, from family pictures to boats!
Just got back from my beach house on LBI today. The first floor had 2 feet of water in it. Totaled everything on the first floor. Major mess. Good news my boat only "floated" about 10 feet. Wedged itself between the garage and house. No damage to either. Just have to get the insuarance money and have at it to fix it up by next summer. Smells bad inside. Major cleanup. We only had a few hours today but hopefully they will open the island back up in a few days to get everything out of the house.
My car was flooded (2011 GS Manual) and totalled by GEICO. Adjuster said hed get back to me today with the payout $$s.
Still have no power and it took 2 30yrd and 1 10yrd containers to cleanout all the debris from the yard.
My mother inlaws car was totalled as well. Our house was fine but the detached garage and property were really flooded and hit hard.
Ill be looking to get back into some sort of Corvette asap. May get a C2 coupe that I wont have to fret over as much as I did my GS. My wife actually thinks we should get another new one so Ive got the green light if want too LOL.
Still no power here. LIPA swears up and down that 90% will have power by tomorrow night. I am not holing my breath. The number of reported outages in my area has not moved, it actually went up today and I don't see how they are magically going to get so many people back up and running by tomorrow night.
Two townships, nowhere near water or flooding are still near the top of the list of outages.
We talked to some federal guys on Assateague Island on the Virginia Side on Sunday and they told us they can't get the road to the beach clear because all their heavy equipment has been sent up north. I know help is coming from all over the area to get things up and running up there. My dad is in Allentown, PA, he just got power back last night.
