Official hurricane sandy help thread
This was brought to my attention over in OT... and seeing the devastation that so many of us all here in the NE have gone through I wanted to set up a thread.

I have only heard from a small small group and right now they dont really have any needs in the Hudson Valley area, those without power are are ok and getting back to normal. Im more concerned about those that are in NJ...
I would ask the MODS to make this a sticky in the NE section, and I will see if I can get the word out. I have to imagine that there are several of our group here who lost homes, cars, or sustained heavy damage.
I would suggest that if anyone is able to provide any kind of local assistance (ie they have a generator, they have food, they have a place to charge cell phones, etc.) that they post up in the thread that I am going to create in the NE section now. Other then that monetary donations are good but I dont see how the funds would get distributed right now... perhaps once we asses the needs of those who sustained heavy losses?
Thank you for your support and thinking of us all in this time of need.
I've spent the last two days shoveling mud out of the garage (29" of tidal water) and trying to save my toolbox and tools. I think they will all be rust in a few weeks, but I am one of the lucky ones. I moved the car to safety Sat. morning and no water came in the house (from above or below). However I still have 5' of water in the basement and that is where the furnace is. So even after the power comes on, if I can't get the water out, I wont be able to stay. Anybody have a sump pump and generator I can borrow for a few days? They can be two seperate people but if it were one person, that would be great. I'm beach block, Belmar. Thanks, Keith.
If there is anything County Corvette can do to help call us. If getting the Corvette out of the area is a help let me know. I have some space if need be even if the car is not damaged. We are also equipped to handle insurance claims.
Also if anyone is in desperate need of food, generator or fuel let me know personally. A few friends and I have already run fuel down to some stranded friends.

Hi all,
I am still without power here. I could use an electricians help/opinion. The eye hook mounted to my house was pulled by the tree that fell on my line.
Will the power company fix that or do I need to call an electrician? If I need an electrician, anyone out there willing to help? I don't have a problem paying. I just don't want to get ripped off. I am on Long Island.
Call my cell since Internet is not always there 516-203-6940

I should be getting power back this morning. The crew tried to finish up last night, but couldn't get it all done. They said they would be able to fix up the eye hook so I don't think I need an electrician.
Split327 did give me a call to see if he could help, but I should be okay. I hope the rest of the Northeast friends are doing well.
That is a long time to be with out power. i was still cleaning up the outside of the house this weekend, i think i need one more weekend. I can't believe it is two weeks already.

I am officially one of those people with power now.
Sorry I missed the house n the hook question. We've been extremely busy replacing meter pans, and rewiring entire houses with UF cable. A warning to anyone that has had salt water in their crawl space covering thier wiring. replace all of the romex/bx/mc/mineral sheathed cable with UF cable. If a contractor tells you that regular romex will be ok, tell him to move on, and get someone who will. Insurance company adjusters will try to argue, but some do not act in the homeowners best interest. salt water is very corosive, we've already had copper splices fail. UF cable does not allow water intrusion. BTW- if water partialy covered your central air unit/units, water heaters, heating units etc... eventually they will fail, replace them. Good luck everyone
