Ok.. I am getting the feeling that I am simply not supposed to make a trip to the track. On my way to E-Town today, I stop to get gas.. Go to start my car back up, and NOTHING :mad :mad .. About 45 minutes later, while they were about to load my car onto the tow truck, the tow guy gave it one more try.. and she starts right up.. I drove it right back home, parked it.. Shut it off.. when I tried to start her back up again.. nothing.. I think its my VATS system (or whatever that chip in the key is called).. Anyone know a workaround for that system??
Mark, try another key if you have one. If not get a new one (or two) made at the dealership. I keep a spare hidden, had that problem down in Skyline but it did start. If it is VATS and doesn't see the key wait 5 minutes before trying again to start. If the power for radio came on but no start it's probably the VATS
hmmmm.... must be a "mark" thing... I had the vette all loaded up, put sunblock on me AND my 13 yr old son... vette would crank but would not start!!! :mad One hour later I decided to swap my pertronix for points. Took a long break, went back, attached the points correctly and it finally started. Set the dwell and was working on the timing when I got called for dinner.....
I took off the distributor shielding this morning so I would be able to play with the timing at the track.... oh well, maybe next week!! At least we have next week, right?? :) MJ
What year is your car? I had that same thing happen to me and it turned out to be the vats wire in the steering callum it moved every time I adjusted the steering wheel up and down and one day it finely would not work at all and I got it towed on to a repair shop, It took them a week to trace the problen and fix it. big bucks later it was fixed. try getting the vats by pass kit from midAmerica direct, that will fix the problem. There is a down side your vats system will not work until you get the broken wire fixed. :chevy
If you want to bypass the VATS key cylinder, take an ohmmeter and check the resistance of the "pellet" in the key. Go to radio shack, and buy a resistor of the same value. Disconnect the 2-wire plus running up your steering column, and install the resistor in place of the plug that goes up the column, on the part that goes up into the dash. You want to put one leg of the resistor into each open terminal of the connector. That's all it takes, email me if you have any questions. I've worked on countless Caddys and Vettes that had the wire break inside the column, the repair will cost you about $250 in a shop, this bypass will cost you about 49 cents for the resistor. Good luck
