Z06 Corvette Killer-We will see more of this.

The GTR was the only other car I was thinking about getting besides a Z06 (still have a few months to go before I get a Z) but with the pics ive seen today I think I will pass.
The GTR is a fine car I'm sure, but its just for a different market I think. Most of us here that are into cars buy them for one of the few main reasons 1) Speed 2) power 3) looks 4) handling 5) or something else ive forgotten
We all take pride in our cars and also their ability to impress someone... I think its agreed that the Corvette is more iconic in the USA then a GTR. Granted it takes a special kind of person to differentiate the regular vette from a Z06.
In my mind I think the only type of people that the GTR will impress over are the younger GranTurismo kids who statistically can't afford such a car. I would see buying a vette as buying into a much larger and well established enthusiast group as well.
I'm not getting a Z06 just to get women (but its a HUGE bonus) if you put a Yellow C6 Z06 next to a Skyline... 100 bucks says any woman will pick the yellow Z06.

Here we go again with the vaporcars.
I still don't see how a car never offered for legal sale for street use by the primary manufacturer is 'Iconic' in the US. It may be an icon in Japan, but here its just vapor in this country, unless you spend more time playing with your Playstation than driving. I hear Lada's are icons in Poland, (or whatever that sick little car was they had running 11's in that other thread). But that doesn't make them icons here in the US. Let it get here, let it go on sale, let it put up or shut up, make it earn its street cred with someone other than fanboi's of video games. In the US, this car is still nothing. Meet back here in a year and we can see how it goes. Until then the GTR is a message board circle jerk.

Wait for an independent test, done by a serious car magazine or TV show. Until then is just smoke (and a stinking one).

Ummmmm, what's that supposed to demonstrate? That it is ugly from all angles?
I don't care if it has 2000 HP it won't outrun UGLY or HEAVY.
FWIW, two years ago I modded an EVO MR to 624 AWHP. Thing would smoke a Z or any other buggy I ever met. But I wouldn't trade my Z for it for many reasons.

Actually, I personally don't think it looks all that bad. Not spectacular, but not bad. 3800lbs? What's wrong with car manufacturers? I realize that power costs money, weight loss costs money, performance in general costs money... but it seems they pack on the power and ignore the weight altogether. I guess horsepower sells, even if the overall performance is mediocre but still. I guess it annoys me to see performance cars from many of the big manufacturers (MB, even Ferrari) with great stats except for being pigs.

Competition at its finest, gentlemen. There are a bunch of kids out there who will think this car is tight. And one day, they'll have money to spend. Hearts and minds...
The minute you discount your competition, they'll step on your neck. The Corvette development crew won't be so quick to write off Nissan, ugly or not.

I'm willing to give it it's due, but the numbers just don't add up. They never have with these cars. 500HP with that curb weight won't outrun even the base C6 any more than the vaunted Mustang GT500 can.
Apart from which, I won't hold my breath. The history of the Skyline for the US has been one of overpromising and under-delivering. The japanese press kept singing the praises of the -33 and the -34 etc. as a giant-killer. When the US press finally got their hands on a Motorex US-legal Skyline (which cost a cool $93K back in 1998, the car only managed a 14 sec 1/4 mile, a 5.3 0-60, and stumbled it's way around the road course. The C5 Vette, FD3s RX-7 and Supra TT also on hand that day ate it for lunch.
I also watched Doug Hayashi wrestle a j-spec one around Buttonwillow one day for its owner, who had brought it over. After spinning 4 times and running config 13 in 2:20 plus, Doug just gave it up and brought the thing back into the pits. They're just to damned heavy.
It's the darling of the ricer / drifting crowd, but it's legend is just that - legend.

Safety Car
There is more at issue than just pumping up horsepower. Emission standards have to be met with Calif having even tougher standards.
I was at the National Z convention in Daytona early October with the SCCA helping the Z people put on the autoX. Nissan has their 350Z Nismo edition (only 2 made). It didn't have any more power than the production 350Z. The Nissan rep said it had to do with emissions, too hard to meet standards with higher HP. So the Nismo Z had body mods and chassis enhancements....did well on the track. I wonder if Nissan isn't having issues with the GT-R and meeting emission standards. Also, ever notice that cars coming into distribution never have the HP of original claims. Incidentally, the Japanese engineers of Nissan were there watching every move. The two Nismo 350Z were destined for the crusher in mid October. Neither had a VIN number.

Yes Nissan is having emmisions issues, they had to put the manual on hold because of it.
The official specs will be out in a few weeks. I doubt it will be much harm on the highway or drag strip (unless you suck). But the handling should be good, and well we know everyone at a DE cant drive to well, so it's a drivers race as it is with pretty much any car over 400 hp.

Not!
The Skyline beating on the Z06..... NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!! Heavy car and unless modded will have a tough time of it. Lets hope it is close to the Z06 0-60 times and road course times because over 75K for a slower car will be tough to sell in high numbers.

As always, you have a choice...don't buy it. I for one, will be trading my Carrera 4 for one of them.
