McLaren MP412C or Porsche 918 Spyder

Default McLaren MP412C or Porsche 918 Spyder

I am am seeking an engineering marvel - not just a supercar. Both of these cars offer just that. I had originally has my sights set on the McLaren but with further though I am now considering the 918 Spyder. The McLaren is 16 months delivery (as it stands) and reliability is probably OK. The Spyder is 24+ months delivery and reliability, if like other P-Cars, should be excellent. The Spyder is twice the price of the McLaren and I would assume the same performance is every category. The Spyder skin is vivacious and probably the best looking car I have layed my eyes on. The McLaren is beautiful but not as aggresive looking. I choose both these cars as I trust their names and theior engineering is light years ahead of the competition. Anyone can build a car with beautiful lines, big HP, and acceptable performance but not one with pure engineering creativity.

There have been otehr cars brought up in my previous post but I am not sure of their relaibiality. Further, I will not buy a car for the namesake. It must be something really special. If my Z06 can stomp it on the track, I dont want it. That eliminates many cars including the F-Cars and the L-Cars (with the exception of maybe the 670SV). I have increased my budget to $700K.

Any ideas?

Given how the 599 laps the Ferrari test track nearly as fast as an Enzo, perhaps your Z06 butt kicking is due more to driver skill than engineering prowess?

To dismiss the 599 as not having engineering is a little bit presumptive IMHO. Especially in terms of aerodynamics, the 599 is a well sorted car.

Additionally... I'm not sure that previous Porsche reliability has much bearing on the 918. That thing is going to have a completely different drivetrain that is going to be one step past the prototype phase. In essence, you'll be the beta tester for it.

That being said, I hear you on the "anyone can make a car with swooping lines and big HP" Cars like the Saleen etc

Of course, the 599 is well engineered but I wouldnt put in the same class as the Bugatti; the Bugatti is creatively engineered. Not because of the price but pure creativity. I sell military items and have competition but we are #1 in the world not because of price. We are #1 because of our features, low life cycle cost, and performance.

Seeing as how you're an engineer, I'm a little surprised you're impressed with the Bugatti. A McLaren F1? Sure, that makes sense. There's something to be said about elegant simplicity. The Veyron has none of that. If anything, it's automotive **** in my opinion.

A Veyron sold at Barrett-Jackson last night for $700k.. that could've been your car.
On a more serious note, the 918 does not seem nearly the car that the MP412 can be. However, I think the 599GTO would be much more up your alley, considering it will probably out perform both of those cars, all while keeping you almost $400k under budget.

I still don't see the McLaren as an engineering masterpiece. It does have a carbon fiber tub but the rest is simple aluminum and composite panels. The suspension is standard double wishbone with adjustable settings. It is standard rear drive with mid-engine design. 7 speed F1 style trans is nothing new. It even comes standard with iron brake rotors. I don't see the supercar status that it is claiming. It looks like McLaren was just looking to get a very similar car to a Ferrari F458. They are similar in a lot of ways if you compare them except the Ferrari looks better in my eyes. Just some thoughts.

My vote for that money would be a Bugatti as stated in previous posts. That is an engineering masterpiece. 10 radiators!, 4 turbos, 16 cylinders, specific tires needed for that speed, one of the best interiors of any car oh and 1001hp.

I dont want to pay 20k$+ everytime I change tires or is it 50k$? I'm not a billionaire.

The Mclaren is quick @ under 3 seconds (C&D notes 3.9 but the factory and independents claim under 3), quicker than the new 911TT PDK @ 3.0 seconds. That makes it quicker than the 599GTO @ 3.35, the 458 @ 3.3, and all Lambo's but the 670SV.

It hits 124MPH in under 10 seconds which is faster than the 670SV.

I will wait for my test drive and see what happens.

I will bet my bottom $ that the 918 is quicker and faster than what the factory claims - Porsche has a habit of being very conservative on their numbers. It has a total of 718 HP and almost the same torque as the electric motor can be used in conjunction with the gasoline engine.

McLaren all the way man. The 918 is just another porsche. I remember when teh Carrera GT came out and all its hype, not its just another Porsche that nobody seems to be impressed with anymore. McLaren never loses its exotic factor.

Just another Porsche! Come on man - do some reading. My 911TT will stomp a ZR1 up to 100MPH. Of course it may be slightly modded.

I have thought about Mosler but if you see the fit and finish compared to a Vette, P, F, McLaren, etc......it just doesnt match up. I realize some people would buy it in a second but thats not me, I am just to conservative I guess.

I will be at the Festival of Speed in Orlando in 2 weeks and will take a second look......thats why i'm going.

The very first Mosler MT900s went for about $170,000 and most certainly, the fit and finish was not quite polished. However, I would have to believe that this aspect of the car has improved over the years. I like the fact that they have stayed with Corvette power.
But I understand that when you're paying this kind of money for a car, it'd better be "polished".
