A rather interesting ummmm discussion (yea that's what it is... a discussion) is taking place about the ability of a stock late model C4 A4 ability to hit an honest 170 mph. Yea an A4 not 5th gear in a 6 speed.
Was just wondering on what your view would be with either trans.
That sounds like a pretty high top end for 300 hp.
I think that you will find that very few if any stock LT1 C4s actually have 300 rwhp as measured on a dyno. A bit of work is needed to the air intake, bump stick and exhaust headers before you'll actually register 300 at the rear wheels.
Unless of course your car is tested by one of the auto mags in which case all bets are off.
Still interested in Tom's opinion.
Hey Keith fortunately the car has bigger ones than I do, so I'm still about 32mph short of 170 and at this point..... I'm smart enough that it will probably stay that way
On a trip to Montana some years ago, I got my 92 A4 'vert with the optional 2.73 gears to just hit an indicated 160. It felt like it was pretty much all done at that speed even though I had a good 1.5 miles of fairly straight downhill run to start. If I would have had more room, it may have hit 161-2.
Coupes may be a little faster given the better aero shape with the hatchback roofline, Also the 'vert sits slightly higher than a coupe (the added height is for the factory X-brace ground clearance).
The ZR-1 was supposed to be able to hit 175 but the LT5 motor was rated at 375HP.

Hey Mark, personally I don't think a "STOCK" A4 C4 can make it to 170. From the few of the C4s with an A4 transmission that I have had the opportunity to dyno test, they will barley pull off 230 to 240hp at the wheels. I know a couple guys with A4 C5s that have tried some top speed runs, and if memory serves me, a stock 350hp LS1 with an A4 didn't make it to 170 either. I searched around the archives on the Corvette Action Center website and found some C&D and R&T performance results from a test with a 96 Grand Sport with an LT4, their test made it to 168 with a 340hp LT4 and a M6 tranmission. So you are pretty much spot on that 170 MPH is reaching for a 300hp LT1.
Ahem. 180. Thus the saying, "Life Begins at 180 Miles Per Hour."
I remember the saying, but were production ZR-1's actually capable of hitting 180 or more? I know that most car magazines that ran top speed tests reported speeds in the high 170's (175-179). Or was that 180 something the later 405HP cars were capable of?
A buddy has a '90 ZR-1 and it wouldn't go much past 165-168. Turned out the actuator that opens the secondary port throttle valves was installed upside down. Guess that was apparently an issue on some of the early LT5 motors?
After we fixed that, the car felt much stronger at WOT and probably would have gone much faster. But we never got a chance to test it. Turns out his wife unit was not happy about the "road tests"......
