Anyone have any experience with a Maaco type paint job? I am looking to get my prep work done by a very good shop and some fiberglass repair, but then to get it one consistant color for a couple of years until I can get the big money for a top of the line paint job do the Maaco type paint shops do ok?
How long would it last, can they typically get it sprayed ok?
So far once I get he motor going it looks like this 89 should take off, from the engine bay standpoint I have not seen any rust issues on the frame rails in that area.
Im not sure about your area but around here the major part of the cost of a paint job is the prep and body work before the paint. I would say over 3/4 of the cost of the job is in the prep and body work. I would also venture to say that the difference between the cost of a Maaco paint job and letting the first shop put a nice paint job on your car would be around $1000. If it were me I would save up and let the first shop do everything from start to finish.

i use to use maaco. its ok on 500 dollar nissans and chevy pickups. but their top of the line paint job is no cheaper than a normal body shop. and its not quite as good. they don't use the good chemicals that make the paint look good and stay on. its just acrylic paint like you get at home depot.
hell i painted a Volkswagon once with spray paint cans and it looked better than a cheap maaco job. lol
shop around and find a shop that is slow and they will cut you a deal. OFFER CASH! they never see that stuff!
They messed up my car and I went with their 'better' paint job, had to redo the cracked lower front valance panel that I paid them to fix and now the paint. I'll never trust them again. Open up your wallet and get a real paint job, you'll thank yourself in the end.
Not sure what you mean by Prep work? If it means they are going to complete all body repairs, and prep the car for paint, you are already 80% there. As stated above, a large cost of a paint is labor getting it ready to spray. Ask the shop that is doing your work what they would charge to go ahead and spray it. You might ask, if they don't already, if they will use an off brand paint, I have used shopline (ppg brand) several times and it sprays as good as the top of the line PPG brands at less then 1/3 of the cost sometime less depending on the base color. Its a good urethane and coverage is good and the clear shines like the sun! You will not be happy with Maaco.
