Default Need help with paint issue!!

Well first off, I would like to ask if the underside of a 73' hood is painted and to what color.

Secondly, my father just purchased a 75' but the paint is in real bad shape, but runs fines and everything works mechanically. He is thinking about getting a shake and bake job on it just to get it all one color and think of only paying about 500 instead of 5000+. I told him to hold off till money comes to do the job once, and to do it the right way. I just want to know if the rest of you think this is justified. I can see where he comes from about getting the car all one color because it is faded and peeling, but to throw away 500 dollars I think is absurd. Correct me if I'm wrong. Please help me convince him that hes making wrong decision!!!!!!!

The underside og my 73 is painted semi-gloss black with a samll amount of body color around the edge. I think this is the original scheme, but could be wrong.

As for the 75, I think your father would be hard pressed to get any paint job for $500 just based on the cost of materials alone. I'm trying to do most of the body work myself. I have the car stripped and the repairs near completion but have not sprayed any primer let alone color and have already spent more then $500.

Correct. Part of the blackout process. Exterior color should show around all four edges. Hinges will have a little color overspray and a little black.

Thanks for the info about the hood! But about the 75.... My father dosent even want the car stripped or sanded before the paint job, he justs wants the painter to mask it off and spray away! Please help me convince him to reconsider and to get it done the right way!

Can't help. That's between the two of you. In deference to Dad, the car may not need to be stripped. At the very least it ought to be cleaned and sanded before the new color goes on.

If the paint is peeling, then it needs to be removed for a quality job peroid.. If he wants to blow his money let him, you cant change peoples mind in the first place most of the time.. when that paint peels off the first mess, then maybe he will re consider what you told him..

If the paint is just faded and not peeling, I'd say give it a good scuffing and go for the $500 paintjob. It wouldn't be that bad if you guys prep the body first, you guys could do that in a weekend.

He'll rest better at night and will be more comfortable driving it until it falls apart. Every high dollar paintjob I've had made me uneasy driving in fear of getting a chip or a dent....you won't have that with a spray and go paint job.

Every $5000 + paintjob I've seen the shop usually kept the car for at least three months on the low end and up to a year on the high end.......something to think about if your dad is wanting to enjoy the car this summer.

Just my opinion

Default paint

A 75 isnt worth all that much unless it has almost no miles on it or is really special. So to put a 5000 dollar paint job on it kinda seems like a little bit of a waste to me. But if I were you I would paint it myself its a great thing when its all done.
