I have heard that regular bondo cannot be used; never a reason why. The corvette shop I talked to told me to use it. I am looking for some Evercoat Vettefill, but cannot find a supplier in Western Canada.
Bondo is too loose of a term these days because there are so many specialty products to choose from. Even the Bondo brand has expanded. Yeah, 30 years ago we used old-fashioned bondo and it worked, but today products are more specific to the surface you are working on. The shop you talked to may have used "bondo" just as a generic term without getting specific as to what they really use. Vette Fill is a lightweight filler and excellent for minor filling whereas the product porchdog mentioned Dyna-Glass is a heavier-bodied reinforced filler mainly for structural types of repair. Every body man has his own techniques, but if you are doing minor filling the Vette Fill would be my choice, it sands smooth with no need for putty.
Whatever filler you choose, look at the tech sheet and see if it is recommended for use on fiberglass.
Sorry about the generic term Bondo. I meant Polyester filler.
Vettefill: A polyester body filler for fiberglass and SMC panels. No shrinkage. Helps prevent repair mapping on seam lines over fiberglass repairs. Used to bond fiberglass panels only, not SMC. Blue cream hardener included.
