I had my wheels painted black and cleared. They are the stock wagon wheels on my '99 FRC...so really they are not worth much. The guy that sprayed them was only going to charge me for the materials. His business does a lot of work for my employer. There are a few sags in the clear..so he didn't charge me a dime He said that it could be buffed out. I asked him what to use and he said some 1500 paper and then some buffing compound. The only worry would be sanding though the clear. Ok...so I have bought some 1500 paper and a compound made by 3M for 1500 or higher paper. How easy is it to sand though the clear? I have above average DIY skills, and would like to do it myself. I mean worse case, I would have to take them back if I sand though the clear. Should I give it a try or run them like they are? I know new wheels are my best option, but not in my current budget.
Make sure they are good and dry (aged) first if you decide to sand. 1500 grit is not that gritty. Lots of guys use it for that show car finish. Then buff it out. The only draw back is they have a few coats of clear on their car. If you use your finger and press down you will sand through the clear if not careful. If they do not look real bad I would leave them alone. Think about it this way, do they look OK now, would they look OK if you sanded through the clear. Or could you even tell with a little polish.
Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to give it a try. The sags in the clear are on the lip area of the wheels. The flat face portions of the wheels came out are perfect. I'm going to give them a few more days to cure so the clear doesn't ball up when I try to sand it. I really think there is plenty clear to sand and polish..the sags have a little texture from the build up.

The longer you wait the harder it's gonna be to do it. I've buffed a fresh paint job that is only 3-4 hours old, with fine results. Tank your time and do it just once!!!
