Had to replace the windshield and decided it was a good time to clean the frame including the front join between the birdcage and the firewall. I cleaned away what I believe to be the factory body sealer over the fire wall to cage seam.
First question is on the jointing compound between the cage and the firewall, appears as a whitish putty. I have not read on the forum any description on this material and was wondering what other members might know about it?
Second question is on the sealer? applied in the wiper arm channel, it seems to be haphazardly applied over the firewall to cage seam and the wiper bases. It scrapes of like a hard grease and is of a deep redish appearance, anybody have info on this material?
Last question, once I have cleaned it all up, repainted the front of the cage and shield frame, what is the best process to seal up the seam again?
Long question and no pictures (still haven't worked that one out yet!) hope some one can help.
Thanks guys.
Tony
I am in the process of reattaching the front fender on my '75, inside seam at the top of the wheelhouse all along from the hood hinge towards the master cylinder about 20" long and the entire length that attaches to the frame rail under the quarter panel molding. Road-Race Vette has guided me thru this via a few PM's and a phone call. If your seam uses the same sealer get a Lord Fusor bonding adhesive kit from Ecklers $119.99 plus shipping. Yup, pretty expensive. Send RRV a PM if he doesn't read your post and make sure you would use the same stuff.
Regards, Mike
Just noticed you're an Aussie. Lord Fusor doesn't ship by air according to the website. If it is indeed the correct product for you to use you may have to wait a while to get it plus shipping cost may be an issue. I have a friend in NZ and we exchange antique motorcycle parts on occasion, but now the US Postal Service has eliminated shipments by sea which was quite inexpensive. Now everything to and from there is by air and 3 times the cost.
