Default GM's horrible paint job(s).. large pictures

I recently purchased a fully loaded GMC Sierra 2500HD crewcab longbox in Onyx Black. I know it's not corvette related but I figured I'd share some pictures of just how terrible GM's paint is (not to mention, it pulls my corvette). I thought it was just my truck but after visiting the dealer again, it's on all black vehicles... Cadillac, GMC, Chevrolet's... Corvettes look good.

I've posted on the Dieselplace forum and have gotten mixed reviews so I thought I'd post here to see what people think and if there's something that can be done. Anyone care to guess the reason for my dissapointment?

That is exactly how I see the world when I am not wearing my glasses. It's almost nauseating.

Hate to say this, but I do photo work for a dealer that sells GM/Mopar/Honda/Toyota/Subaru and that kind of paint finish comes up very, VERY often on new cars. I've almost become used to it.

It wasn't until a 4 year old BMW came in on trade that I really went back to appreciating a good paint job. The new theme seems to be that if they (new car manufacturers) dump enough pearl/flake into the paint, then it doesn't matter.

It would cost any car company way too much money to invest in final detail work like cutting the orange peel off. ALl the paint is done by robots and 90% of the public at large doesn't care so why should they put forth all that investment for the 10% that do?

Orange peel really doesn't bother me on an everyday car.
Even a small amount on a factory painted Corvette doesn't bother me.
But, I don't like it on a show car of any kind.

It is interesting how it varies though. I just bought a new Buick Lucerne with the White Gold Flash Tricoat and it has very little orange peel.

I like to see factory orange peel.

Every manufacturer has its own original orange peel.

A previous poster on this thread mentioned BMW, so I have to chime in. I recently went car shopping for my wife, and was amazed at the very obvious orange peel on new BMWs, even the high buck 6 and 7 series! The salesman gave me some rot about BMW doing that ON PURPOSE to prove that the cars were hand-crafted! ( I love car salesmen!). Incidently, we ended up buying a lease returned Audi for about half the price of new (with a very glassy black finish).

Default My Wife

GM's paint job was so bad on a member's 05 vette that my wife noticed it and asked me if it had been in a wreck.

When my wife can see this problem...that is really bad.

Also, I observed the same problem with the driver's door on a new vette on a showroom floor.

Bottom line, if we all are willing to pay for it and don't press GM to set the standards higher, then why would GM worry !

Have the Japanese make Corvettes...that's an idea.

Its not the paint, it's your camera lens. Your garage looks the same as the tailgate
