Hey guys,
My 68 is in the process of being painted. I talked the guys who are doing it to use spi epoxy and universal clear.(actually porchdog did the talking i just gave them his number) Anyway these guys are sold on the epoxy they love the way it goes on and sands, their going with all epoxy no other primer. They say they can't wait to try the clear.I've taken pictures throughout the process, when the car is done i will post them. Just really want to thank porchdog (shine) for taking the time to talk to me and the painters he's a cool guy to talk to.
Take it easy,
Dave
something i learned today. the black and grey epoxy when shot now has a grainy finish. kinda like over spray. it is the coal used to darken it. this pigment is stuck together and gives it this look. barry is working on a remedy . it will cause no problems. i finish epoxy off to 600 before color so it causes no problems. so i dont need a seal coat.
be sure to pass this along to your painter 68/69. tell him to just skip the sealer coat.

once you go spi.................. you never go back
I'm glad because you will get a superior job an your painter will make some money from saved time.
OK guys I heard pleanty about SPI paints, I'll have to give them a try.
I'm in O.C. Calif. About ready to do the flames and shaved doors on my 64.
How can I order SPI epoxy and Clear, On line? local shop? let me know.
barry has the problem with the grey and black epoxy fixed now.
Last Question, I promise well for a little while any way.
My 64, I painted @4 years ago w/PPG BC/CC. I will re-paint the front
and doors (few chips and stress cracks) then ghost flames. The rear of the car I will scuff and re-clear the whole car. What SPI Clear would be better HS or Universal over the PPG clear?
the uv is a little more user friendly. i hate shooting hs anything. i use the uv on everything. shoots really well and buffs with 1/3 the effort of ppg.
I used spi for the 1st time and it was great. I did sand with 600 after the primer black coat. I also had to sand after base coat due to putting another coat of primer before base and ended up having the look of over spray so I sanded it again. Then put more base down and a bunch of uv clear. I went with black and the black is very nice but in pictures it looked blue. The reason is the car is so shiny that im getting reflection from the very blue sky we get in Colorado.
The car now draws alot of attention everywhere I go im very happy with it. Wish I could post pics have to get that figured out some time. Everyone likes the car and ive been told that its the best garage painted car that they have seen. Painted the car for under a grand and spent a bunch of long hour days on it but was well worth it. Lucky I work 3-4 12 hr shifts at work so I have alot of days off to play.
