ok i just bought a 85 corvette, the paint on it is really bad spider web all over and on the doors has paint chipping off with pits in it, so i need to sand it all the way down ,what is the best way to do this,i started block sanding with 80 grit till my arms fell off lol will wet sanding help ,thanks
You have to be careful, but I have done it this way:
Get a big compressor and a D/A. And get wet 80 grit paper for it.
Sand carefully with it and stop when you hit primer.
After you get all the paint off you can with the D/A, sand the rest of the paint and primer off by hand. Hand sanding primer off is much easier than paint. Do that wet too.
If you get down to the gel coat, I would highly recommend an epoxy primer or your basecoat may bleed into the fiberglass and cause a reaction. If you have any low spots, do your filler work first, block it down and then epoxy primer.
sorry guy, but if you know what your doing its a piece of cake. people with no fiberglass experience should never try this method. i have been doing fiberglass repair and corvette body restoration since 1979...
never seen a use for it even as board paper. far as i go is 80 and not much of it. i blast vettes to get rid of old paint and repairs , dont use chemstrip either .
Corvettes have never been gel coated at the factory. Never.
Never say Never, Actually, in 1954 some bodies were done with white Gelcoat, and many parts on pilot line cars, like the 63s were also gelcoated. I agree that most were not, but we cant say Never.
