I am working on a 90 Vette for my son and a 75 for myself. Assuming all bodywork and guide coating was complete. How much Epoxy primer, base coat and clear should be needed. Both vettes are coupes and both will be painted a different color. I am planning on using PPG products. Thanks for any advice.
I'm in the process of having my 72 painted. I'm an amateur. I think I will use 2 qts of epoxy primer, a gallon of K36 high build primer, and a gallon of paint. Not sure about the clear yet but probably a gallon. Wont take a gallon of paint or clear, but its so much cheaper by the gallon.
Porchdog or someone else more knowledgeable, please chime in...
ON my 79 I went with SPI and it took 1 gallon of each epoxy, base, clear. But remember each is reduced by 1 to 1 so I started with 2 gallons of each and when I was done I had about 1.5 gallons. So I used 4.5 gallons on my car and was very happy with it.Its cheaper to buy it by the gallon and if you run into problems then you dont have to order more and wait so its a good idea to order extra anyway.
if you use epoxy only as a sealer 2 qrts will give you 1 gal sprayable. gal of clear and depending on base you may get by with 2 qrts but i like having some left. have your base shaken and poured into qrt cans .order some empty quart cans too. when your done pour you leftover into qrts. it will keep longer without all the air in the can.
Porchdog I believe you specified white sealer under red gave the best pop to the color and what about black top coat? Even though I asked about clear there is a good chance I will be doing single stage based upon some of your inputs I have seen in the past. Am fairly new to painting but want to try. Thanks again top all.
black epoxy for black car. ss is the way to go on black. you can block it out with 600 and glamor coat it before buffing. i dont use clear coat over black.

You can't go wrong with advice from "porchdog". He has helped me a lot this past year with the SPI paints and how to use them. You mentioned PPG paint.. one warning. I found is that the cheaper PPG
(Omini), is that the color will not be the same if you want to touch up later with new paint, stick with the better PPG products, and you won't have that issue.
P.S. The "Dog" was right on the money on shooting 2-3 coats of clear,
let dry and block. then several days 2-3 more Clear and color sand to
2500 then buff. "Show car Finish"
Thanks Mayordaly. I look forward to PorchDogs advise and I appreciate your info on the paint. I agree I am not looking for cheap material just cheap labor aka me. I hope to get some sealer shot soon and then start final blocking and filling until spring when the temps will be high enough to paint. I'll fill in with other projects on the 75 until then, unless we get a real warm spell here in New England.
i use ppg concept at the moment. just dont see much reason to change. spi no longer makes colors or i would use it. i've had bad luck with omni ss black.

PPG Concept it is. Your endorsment is good enough for me.
concept WILL sag on you . set your gun up right before you start !!!! you must shoot thin wet coats . you lay it to it and you will see it on the floor.

Thanks for the info. Never used PPG paint and have only tried painting a couple of cars in the past. No problems with runs or orange peel just stupid mistakes like not watching where the air hose was, puts nice lines in paint when it is laid on top of wet paint.
My son is leaning towards a red or garnet for his 90. did you say don't clear red or always clear red?
