Default help with paint/body repairs

I got hit in the rear of my 67 coupe while in a Memorial Day parade, the guy behind me said his foot slipped off the brake and hit the gas.My ins. co.(Haggerty) said it would be in my best interest for them to handle the claim and they would collect from the other ins. co.(state farm),i'm beginning to wonder whos side my ins. co. is on. Haggerty's adjuster said they would repair the rear deck, tailight panel, and exhaust panel. They would only paint the above and clear coat it and the roof. The paint on the roof is somewhat cracked and spiderwebbed, how can you shoot clear on that? The cars was painted with lacquer in the mid 70s.Iwas told that the areas with clear coat would be much shinier than the rest of the car.One body man said they should paint the entire rear clip and the roof and blend at the doors. Iam not trying to get them to restore the whole car,I just want them to do what is right, and for the paint to match. Imight have the rest of the car repainted if i can afford it.What should they do? Am i expecting too much? What are my rights? Please advise what i should do.

In a case like this the fairest you can do is get the Ins. to agree to pay a set price for the damage, the only way this vintage paint can be repaired properly is most likey a full repaint. get the ins. to kick their fair share damage amount, then you find someone to do the whole job. It will cost greatly for a full proper repaint, good luck...69VETT

That is the oldest insurance co. trick in the book. " Oh go ahead and we will fix it and settle with the other insurance co. later". Think about it. Both companies know how many of the others hit them and vice versa. If both parties deny the claim, what just happened? You and the other party paid deductibles.

I would go after the other company. Hagerty should have no interest unless the other company acts up.

been there done that, private Joe against Insurance company X.
I ain't worth the headaches, .... fighting with an Insurance company.
take what you can get, and then go fix your Vett the proper way.
No one can match up 30 year old cracked paint.
It sucks but you can't expect them to pay 100% for a new paint job either.
Personally I would get a quote for painting the whole car, they have already agreed to paint, the back half of the car, so they get half the bill, that's what I would aim for.
also if you find the right body shop, they will help you accomplish your goal.
Good Luck...69VETT

We at our shop have dealt with claims from Haggerty and found the company to be very helpful. They were responsive to the fact that cars had to be fixed properly, and also paid us our labor rate, not the insurance standard.
A knowledgable body person needs to go over the damage in detail with the adjuster, and explain that the damaged part of the car will have to be stripped of all it's paint and repaired properly, in order for the car to retain it's value. Basicaly, the adjuster needs to be informed of all the steps necessary to do the repair. Adjusters are not body guys, and a lot of times they cant tell what it is going to take to properly repair a car, especialy a Corvette where if the repair is just patched in, it could show up again a few months later.

Depending on what the actual damage is you could request payment for a full rear clip replacement , as that will truly bring the car back to "before hit" status.(this does not mean that you will actualy replace the clip, but you need to bring it up anyway.) Remember, your car isnt a Honda Civic. Insurance companies arent just going to give you a ton of $$ for the asking, but if approached in an inteligent manner, collector car ins. companies will respond well.
After the maximum amount of $$$ for the repair has been negotiated, then you pitch in the extra $ to completely paint the rest of the car. 30 year old paint combined with new paint, will not look right.

Bottom line is you didnt cause this, and it has to be repaired properly!!! I would never settle for any less than a perfect invisible to the naked eye repair.Period. The guy should have found a cheaper car to run into.!!!

I hope this helps and Any questions feel free to contact me.

I agree that Hagerty should have no interest in the deal unless and until there is a problem with the other party's insurance company.

Also agree that you should get a qualified body shop to estimate the damage and the proper level of repirs required. Probably would be good if the shop is a State Farm approved shop, harder for State Farm to argue about the estimate. Then, get with State Farm to have them tell you what they will pay for and if that is not satisfactory, get Hagerty to press them to get it done. At that point, Hagerty would settle the claim with you and choose/or not to go after State Farm.

I have had State Farm on all my cars, boats, houses, business, etc. for years and have never had an unsatisfactory experience when it came time to make a claim.

Good luck with it, hope you get a good result.

When I was rear ended the other insurance co (Hartford) paid for a new press-molded tail light panel, quarter and a $1500 NOS rear deck. I didn't even have to argue with the adjuster, just informed him that's what the parts cost and he said OK.

But it will be difficult to make them agree to paint the rest of the car. Unfortunately that will most likely have to come out of your pocket.

69vette---haggerty will only approve painting the rear deck, tailight panel, and exhaust panel. They will not paint the rear quarters. This is my complaint, they should also paint the roof too,the rear deck flows into the roof. I dont know if i can afford to do the rest of the car,it depends on the cost,i am retired and lost a lot of my retirement funds when the economy went south. I just dont want the car to look like crap. The color is Marlboro maroon, not easy to match under the best of circumstances

I finally found a shop that said the entire rear clip and roof needs to be painted, and the shops owner has a nos tailight panel on a shelf. He said the damaged panel would cost more to repair. He agreed it is better to deal directly with State Farm, they are an approved State Farm shop.I also decided to bite the bullet and repaint the rest of the car, they gave me a very resonable price,$5,ooo to strip and paint the doors and front clip. Ihad an estimate from another shop to only paint of $15-$20,000 not including the repairs to the rear end, some guys dont want to be the biggest ,just the richest. The shop doing the job came VERY highly recomended, they are known for their high quality work and attention to detail.I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to offer their advice,i really appreciate it!
