Default Firewall Re Surface

I have sanded my firewall and in some places too much to where some of the fibers are showing and some of the rivets need to be removed and replaced. My painter believes that Gel Coating the firewall will be too hard to work with and sand. Is there something else that can be used? Feather Fill, Epoxy, SMC??

Not only is painting the car important but I want the firewall to look good. I have looked at cars with great paint jobs including the inner fenders, but the firewalls always seem to be lacking.

I apologize for the shadows in the photo, only photo I could immediately find.

First thing you need to do it scrub the entire thing clean with scotch-brite and lacquer thinner. Next thing you need to do is chip away all of GM's lovely adhesive they overused. Do this first, then decide what else needs work and smoothing. Do it one step at a time. It took me 1.5 months to redo my entire firewall.

This is why I pulled my entire firewall apart, and replaced everything.

PPG K36 urethane primer. It will lock the fibers down and builds enough to were you can block it.
