At todays prices, to get a paint job as least as good as factory paint, would it be safe to say that any Corvette that needed a complete repaint that was a 2001 or older would be considered "totaled" by an insurance company?
Certainly not if you have agreed value collector's insurance on the car. "Ordinary" insurance, even with "agreed value" might total a car if keyed or otherwise defaced to the point of needing a complete refinish, but if an outfit like Hagerty's... for instance... says they'll cover your car for $17,000, then it's covered for that amount. If you want good insurance for your pride and joy it is available; you need to do some research on actual coverage before you sign up though.
From 2001 and older Corvettes have such a value difference...that a repaint could easily cause for it to "total-out". An awful lot has to do with condition and other factors....which and add to the cost of a repaint. General rule ...75% of the vehicles value is the point of where a vehicle will "total out". Insurance coverage..as earlier mentioned...can effect this issue.
This is my quandary...... I have a 97 that is in need of paint. The value of the car is about equal to a really nice paint job. I cant justify or afford to spend $5000 and on up for paint. So I'm considering having a Macco repaint done. I'll do the disassembly / reassembly. Its a driver and this should be fine for this situation.

It has everything to do with the prep that they perform...or do not perform. AND...the type of paint that is used.
