Painting 1999 Roof Panel
I purchased a used roof panel for my 1999 Coupe. It's bright Red, and my car is Mag Red Metallic.
I've taken it two three shops - who all provided quotes to me.
Shop one - Certified - 285$ + tx
Shop two - Guy smoked while working, no certifications 325$ + tx
Shop three - Well recommended - Certified, detail uses water born paint - 414$ + tx
What other things should I consider when choosing who to bring my business to?
Each wants to keep the car throughout the paint matching process - no problems with that.

Check to see if they belong to the BBB. But sometimes good shops don't belong, so it's not a huge deal.
Warranty on their work.
Ask for some referrals or to see some of their work.
Hell, I don't care if the guy is doing two chicks at the same time and smokes as long as the work is quality and warrantied.

So - inquiring a bit more about the painting & stuff...
One guy says it's a Base-Clear, another says it's a tri-coat... Tri-Coat being a bit more time-cost sensitive...
Do I care - so long as the color matches my existing Magreg metallic?

IF it is a tri-stage...which means that it requires a tinted clear on top of the basecoat color...and then clearcoat on top of that. A test panel will need to be shot to make sure that the number of coats of the tinted clear are found. IF the basecoat color is off....then the color will not come out correctly. EVERYTHING must be RIGHT to get a match...if it is a tri-stage. If it is basecoat/clearcoat. Then it will be up to the shop to shoot a test panel and verify that their mix is correct to your car. Tinting of their mix may be required to get it to work...and butt-matching it to the surrounding panel will be fun...and I would advise blending the panels.
