What are the best steps to take when looking into painting my tranny and engine? it is out of the car right now and would like to refurbish it all while out? Any info on the steps I need to take would be awesome!
For your engine...I would make sure it is CLEAN and free from oil and other stuff stuck to it that does not belong there. I take a grinder/sander and clean up any rough edges where the casting material is sharp and not needed. I do not go crazy trying to put excessive amount of paint on the engine. I am in the belief that excessive film thickness can possibly cause the engine to run warmer/hotter due to having such a thick coating on it...much like a chromed engine block will run hotter. Regardless if it true or not...it is what I believe. You can use aerosol engine enamel paint or an alkyd enamel. If you have a rusty pan and or timing chain cover...and depending on what you are wanting for an end result. You can use a rust remover on these parts so the paint will adhere and not immediately flake off.
As for the transmission...if I apply anything on it I apply the non-smudge aluminum and I apply it very thin. I do not like a heavy coat on the transmission for the same reason as the engine block. Most times I clean it well and leave it natural.
