Tacking Base Coats?
Solid color I do at times...but metallics only if they have flashed off for a long time and I feel I need to because I see "things"....but only after I know the basecoat has flashed off for a LONG time (1+hour or more)...and that is in my paint system...i can not say it works on other paint systems
If you are wanting to tack off eh paint due to excessive overspray...you have problem in the choice of reducer, air pressure, distance, gun-set-up and other variables....the paint should not look "dusty" when you look across the top surface...at least I know my paint does not look like that. When I do tack mine off...my tack rag still looks fresh and not the color of the car. If you do tack before clear,,,,you better be PRECISE in your motions and not miss a spot...which if it is a metallic...it can actually show when you apply the clear due to this overspray dust will possibly settle differently that the paint beside it which has no overspray dust on it.
