I used PPG Deltron on the last two Vettes with great results. I'm finishing up the body repairs my 73 and I'm considering giving SPI a go because of the cost differential from PPG. I've read all the nice reviews on their primers and Universal clear, but there doesn't seem to be much out there about their base colors. I know they have a limited selection. Talked to Andy yesterday and he's sending me color sample chips for their 3 reds. Has anyone used their color base? Any feedback? Thanks...
barry has never made oem colors . after moving to the new plant he dropped colors altogether but has brought back a few. his red is really nice as is the black. i used his orange on my shop truck .
if looking for oem color i have used the prospray . also hear good things about wanda paint .

Thanks PD, this 73 is a NOM light resto mod. So if I like one of his reds, I may go with it. I was quoted $821 for a gal of Mille Miglia red in the PPG The SPI is about a 1/3 the cost. I have a 66 Chevy II SS I'm doing next where I'll definitely have to use the oem color.
Have you ever used the SPI white base? How close do you think it would be to 1970 classic white? I have the car stripped and will be painting it white, but it does not have to be an exact match (not like I am creating a full blown restoration or anything). I just need good quality base that will look similar to the factory white.

821/gallon. That obviously includes masking and application.
is SPI Black epoxy primer better than their Hot Rod black?
Jumping into the fire on this one. But porchdog knows it best...so hopefully he sees this.
But all I know and what I have experienced...especially on metal parts. And that EPOXY PRIMER is NOT a stand alone product....meaning it SHOULD be covered with another product and not exposed to the elements. I KNOW it has been applied by itself and left alone and does fine...but that is normally on parts that do not see sunlight and get exposed to rain, etc.
barry started adding uv protection to the black epoxy some years ago when the flat black craze started. it is good exposed for quite a while. have not used the hotrod black. most every epoxy i have ever used sanded like crap and would die and fad in only a few months. i used dp for many years but not for a build primer. it was a great barrier but not much of a top coat.

Thanks for the info PD. I ended up going with SPI's red. I still have to wet sand and buff, but I'm very happy with the color and their Universal clear.
