Strange bubbling.

Bubbles have appeared in a couple of spots I have filled.

You cut into them, and you see SMC underneath, with a light (almost dust like) coat of yellow filler on it.

The epoxy primer, surfacer and glaze are attached to the filler.. and appear to be fine.

Mixing issue or strangeness with the filler? It's 3m's premium line. (3M 01131 Platinum Plus Filler ) Approved for SMC. Two different cans.

This stuff is all over the crushed quarter and the hood and has been for months.. Through temperature cycles and driving.. Sitting in the sun. Nothing else has happened and one spot it has happened twice.

It's only happened in 4 small places on the entire car, but it makes me scared to topcoat it.

Ideas?

seems like bad prep. if the filler looked cured right both times the panel likely has oil or something on/in it.

most likely small areas of unmixed filler . when you cut into one look for a soft spot .

Both 'NONN37' and 'porchdog' are correct if my comment means anything.

It is either bad prep..or filler that was not used correctly or a combination of the both of them....or the SMC is compromised.

I can say that driving a car when it is going through the body work stage is kinda a dangerous situation. I do not give a hoot if it is primed with epoxy or any other type of primer... excluding gelcoat due to its properties...and possible a polyester primer...but I still would not do it regardless.....because...as in one of my past posts....I wrote how automotive paint is some of the worst out there in comparison to that of what the military uses on there vehicles. Those words were the that of the federal inspector inspecting the parts I had painted stated. And when using the tool he had that would spark if it found path to the metal THROUGH all of the layers of primer/paint. The military approved paint I used did not allow any sparks...but going up to a car and testing it...it sparked like crazy...which means it found paths to the metal.

Only passing along what I personally witnessed....and in seeing this...it can only make sense ( in my opinion) that subjecting any of the layers of what we apply to contaminants or excessive moisture is not a good idea.

I have no idea why it did it in one area only....but when I see stuff like that...it raises all kinda of RED flags.
