Hi all. I'm sure this has been covered but I can't come up with any solid answers searching threads so here goes. I see a lot of pictures here where people are doing fiberglass repairs and there's masking tape on the body that winds up under the fiberglass that's applied. What is that for?
It is used as a sanding guide sometime. I have seen people use it when glassing in seam lines. When they sand they know when they hit the tape they are getting close to height of the adjacent body panels.
And the tape like rvzio mentioned is a backer so when any repairs are being done the fiberglass resin and or body filler will lay against it and thus the tape is help in got possible crate a surface once th fiberglass /resin and body filler sets up.
Like RVZIO said, I use the masking tape as a backer while laminating over holes or areas that need to be built out. Pre-saturate the mat/cloth with your resin and place directly against the masking tape. The adhesive on the masking tape is not doing anything to hold the wetted mat. Once the lamination is cured, remove the tape and continue with laminating the other side.
Also, as 929nitro said, masking tape can be used to define an area where you don't want resin to run down over as you are laminating.
