Default Door Removal

What is the preferred method for taking a door on and off for paint/bodywork stuff? Undo the hinge at the door and remove or undo the hinge at the body and remove?

1968 Coupe

Thanks,

Jason

Jason,
It all depends so I can not answer this.

I need to know EXACTLY what your intentions are.

Becasue 'body work stuff' is a very subjective comment and I do not want to tell you something that is not correct.

Hi Jason, remove the door leaving the hinges on the car with any shims. I made that mistake and it was much tougher to get back on.

That makes sense Roger. Trying to get my head wrapped around this car again after such a long break!

Know what you mean. The mistake I made was I wanted to clean up the door jamb hinge posts but I had already dialed in the doors for my gaps. There was no way I was removing it all for the jambs. If your into that then you need to remove the hinges, clean and then do the doors.
Whatever!

So I guess you have the answer to your question?

For what it is worth:

So it depends on the extent of what you are doing and the condition of other parts.

I can say I make sure the hinges are in good condition. If the bushing are shot. I replace them....then I do the door gaps...then I take the hinges off the hinge post and prep the hinge post and hinges. Then I modify the hinges if they are hyper extended so I do not have the issue where the door can contact the hinge and crack the edge of the door like many of us have seen and ruin my paint job. Then I put the hinges back on after they have been media blasted and epoxy primed and all of the epoxy priming and priming of the hinge post has been done and fresh SEM seam sealer applied and get everything adjusted properly and sealed up with the SEM beige catalyzed seam sealer where it is needed so I can paint the car.
