I have painted several cars at this point, maybe 6 or 7 over my life. Not an expert by any means, but have some experience with both single and 2 stage paints.
I have spent a year glassing and sanding my 73 vette. It is ready for paint, finally!! Here is my issue. In the several times I have primered it, I have yet to get the vents in the fenders and the underside of the top of the back window covered satisfactorily with primer. Painting the back window area without touching the back deck is also pretty challenging. For primer, it is realy not a big deal, I just go back and get them covered and sand them out. However overspray and small areas of too much primer have been a problem for both of these areas during primer.
I am thinking of going with a 3 stage paint, but my experience with these two trouble spots on the car have me thinking my skills for these areas are just not up to the task.
For those that have done 3 stage paints, can you give me some of your thoughts on getting these problem areas covered without ending up with splotchy mid coat coverings?
Thanks

Also, went to the paint store today. They sell PPG. Had a tough time getting anything but OEM colors from them. Anyone using these online paint stores? thanks

Simply because of availability, I think I am going to end up with PPG 936235 (Chrysler Red, it is on the newer cherokee's I think). I wanted to shoot PPG's 936717 out of their vibrance collection and/or even get a custom color with the 936717 as a base. Maybe a bit more blue to give it a bit deeper color.
Unfortunately, my paint shop is just not interested. So short of driving a long distance to a different shop or ordering online, I am stuck with OE color.
The color I am going with is a 2 stage at this point, so it will be fine. The only other question I have is technique to get the top of the back window and the fender vents. I will probably practice with some thinner in the gun until I get it right, then spray the car. Don't know any other way of getting it done. The back window is tough to get to on these cars.
check into HOK paint colors. you will find a color real close to what you want without the nightmares of tri stage . easy to shoot and repair.
as for the sail panels and such i use an iwata lph 100 with the sidewinder cup . it is my go yo gun for tight spots or weird angles .

Thanks for the reply.
Bought my color yesterday. Will prep the garage today and spray it hopefully tomorrow. Going with PPG 2 stage.
I have a prolite mini gun I will try to use for the weird angles with a devilbiss teika for the remainder of the car. Will see what happens, should be nice.

good luck with it . slow and deliberate beats hurry up every time. i go into slow motion when it's time to paint . check everything twice read my cans even though i've been painting for 45 years .

Thanks for the words of wisdom. Will be spraying jambs today with the rest of the car tomorrow now.
