So this isn't necessarily corvette related as I'm not repainting my vette, but auto paint related.
so I painted my daily and the hood came out bad, basically it has lines from my paint passes that can be seen. (I'm doing this with the hood closed if that matters)
This didn't happen anywhere but the hood. I was having some gun issues so I thought it was due to too much air and a slightly clogged tip leaving those lines.
well I painted just the hood again after painting a truck of mine (fenders only) that went perfect, and I got the exact same issue even after 4 coats. Those damn lines.
I even did each coat in perpendicular passes to the preceding coat.
Is there something I'm missing about painting a hood?
Anybody with painting experience that could offer any tips would be appreciated.
What color are you painting? Are you doing single stage or 2 stage paint? It's hard to say with such little information provided. Pics would help. I will be able to give you my opinion with this additional info.
sorry about the huge pic files, didn't know how to change.
So I'm using a single stage Urethane that does NOT require a clear. It's TCP Global Hot Rod Flatz paint.
This color happens to be Tunnel Ram Grey Metallic. I had the same results with the color that the rest of the car is on the hood as well, nowhere else.
It was also hot rod flatz, just a different color and non metallic.
I just sprayed the tunnel ram on my truck, pictured, and did the fenders and running boards. It's smooth and consistent as can be, no striping anywhere.
When painting metallics I always use a base color under the metallic, In this case I would use a solid gray basecoat similar to the topcoat. Then shoot the metallic over it. Metallics are very transparent. Your paint gun is not adjusted properly. Looks like too much air pressure and the spray pattern is not adjusted properly. Make sure you have your paint mixed correctly with the proper reducers. Good luck!

I didn't change the settings on the gun since I just sprayed this color a week ago.
But I will play with it and see if I can get any better results.
Do you think I need more paint volume coming out?
And less air volume?
I do have the needle set with fairly minimal movement.
I'm pretty sure I have the pattern adjustment as wide as it can go.
Do you think it's too wide?
I'm running air at the recommended pressure from the paint data sheet (40-45) but I could try lower?
I've painted a few cars but I'm still generally in novice territory.
The mixture pattern on your gun is not spraying correctly. I use a large piece of sheet metal (trash can) to set my gun settings on before moving to the car. On a trash can try varying your spray fan width. Make sure your fluid tip on your gun is clean.
Maybe not your issue but a friend of mine has a body shop and last week it was in the 90's most of the week. His shop doesn't have AC. He had to come in at 5-6 AM when it was some what cool to spray paint. He says when it's really hot the paint starts to dry as it comes out off the spray gun. He is spraying base coat clear coat.

yeah I hear ya on that one, I've had trouble in heat before too.
but this one I did this past sunday in the philly region, which was WAY cooler than the past few days before it.
It was probably mid 70's and I was in a garage so no direct light either. It must be spray pattern related.
I just have no idea why it worked great a week ago and not now with no changes to equipment, paint or person doing it.
