I have heard of some Tuners being able to pull 460 to 480 to the wheels out of a heads and Cam package setup on a 346. How and what the hell kind of H/C do they put on the motor. Is it all in the Cam? Is a setup like this nitrous friendly also. All you tech geniuses please chime in.
well a good list would start here and not end by any means..
-good headers(lg pro, kooks, ect) 1-7/8's no cats and bullets(my opinion)
-halltech intake with power duct(donaldson, vararam, ect)
-90 mm ls2 throttle body and 90mm fast intake
-asp underdrive pulley
-electric waterpump
-ported ls6 oil pump
-afr 225cc heads (62cc chambers) for a lil bump in compression
-g5x3 or 4(t-rex, magic stick, very agressive cam choice)
-textrallia clutch with lightweight flywheel
-injectors and a spot on tune
that should get you to 450+ no problem...i believe theres a guy on here running a lg g5x4 cam with good heads, open headers maybe gears? he got 500 wheel....try doing a search
Keep in mind, sometimes both engine belts are removed, rear brake rotors, and lightweight wheels are sometimes used. Granted, these cars are still making great numbers, but little tricks are sometimes used so they can achieve thier magic #.

The other thing to keep in mind is TORQUE.
A lot of folks get blinded by hp #'s and then you look at their dyno and the torque is all over the place and not very consistant.

I did 455 rwhp on my 02 Z06 and I built the engine myself, (1st time). No dyno tricks whatsoever, just the way it is driven on the street with a relatively mild cam(F13), AFR's, LG's w/o cats and a 90/90 set-up. These numbers are really quite common. Oh yeah, and stock cat-back, stock rocker arms, and stock water pump.

I see this expression on occasion and was just wondering......what sort of "dyno tricks" are you talking about and how would the 'average joe' know that this was going on when their vette was on the dyno?
There were a handfull of cars from Cartek that were getting @ 500 rwhp with H/C only according to the owners. This is going back 2-3 years. It always started a huge pissing match between tuners. I'm not saying these cars didn't make the claimed numbers, as there were plenty of them running in the 10's, it's the drivability claims that I always doubted. I just don't want my street car to idle like a pro stock car, spew stank in the air because of no cats, and get 20 mpg highway. The whole reason I went FI was to have the hp, but also retain o.e. levels of NVH. For a track car, fine, but my car sees the street way more than the track.

Some dyno tricks are: Pumping air pressure in tires way up to decrease rolling resistance, by-passing unnecessary accessories with short belts, putting race gas and a very aggressive tune in the car, running open exhaust systems, cheating the dyno correction factors, and I am sure there is more I didn't list.
